SUMMARY
Mountain Air is a high-elevation, private community in Burnsville, NC, with a nature program as one amenity of the Country Club. The naturalist positions are interpretive outdoor education jobs with a strong emphasis on local Appalachian flora and fauna. In addition to leading nature programs, naturalists' responsibilities include wildlife management, maintenance of a small pollinator garden, Outdoor Discovery Center operations, extensive hiking, and regional outfitter services. 

SCHEDULE
The 40hr/week schedule matches seasonal vacation patterns and includes several evenings each month, occasional overnights, and all weekends and holidays during the 6-month season. Shared employee housing may be available near Mountain Air at a reasonable rental rate. Compensation starts at $15/hr.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in biology, ecology, environmental studies, wildlife management or related natural science field.

Attributes: 

  • Enthusiastic teacher and learner with an outgoing, engaging disposition
  • In-depth knowledge of southern Appalachian flora and fauna, particularly mammals, birds, wildflowers, and trees
  • Availability to start early May or sooner
  • Above-average level of physical fitness: able to hike 5 miles while speaking coherently to a group; able to lift 50 lbs. when needed
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Childcare/teaching/camp experience
  • Committed team player with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Comfortable when handling reptiles (resident corn snake and 2 turtles).
  • Attention to detail in written, spoken, and graphic communication.
  • Excellent judgment when handling new or unexpected situations.
