Overview:

Primary Responsibilities:

Deliver clear, organized, and engaging programs to a diverse range of students with the goal of connecting visitors to Yellowstone and building a constituency for preservation
Demonstrate effective communication and teaching skills; adapt teaching methods to participants and situations, and empower participants to form their own opinions about complex issues
Articulate the YF mission and represent it accurately and positively; encourage participation in the organization through philanthropic support, volunteerism, and Institute programs
Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of Yellowstone National Park and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, to include (but not limited to) the natural, cultural, and geologic history, wildlife, and management issues  
Understand and follow YF policies and procedures and National Park Service regulations
Emphasize the protection of park resources, Leave No Trace practices, and adherence to YF’s Code of Ethics

Operate vehicles, including 14-passenger minibuses and other vehicles, safely and defensively and follow appropriate vehicle safety checklists
Anticipate and manage potential hazards or group issues that might arise due to wildlife, terrain, weather, or student attitude/ability
Prepare students for the field through pre-course and daily orientations
Demonstrate sound judgment and the ability to manage a group effectively under changing, stressful, or emergency conditions
Follow YF emergency procedures and facilitate emergency response
Represent Yellowstone Forever and its mission accurately and positively
Foster a collaborative, team-oriented environment with YF employees, volunteers and partners
Travel into Yellowstone, throughout the Greater Yellowstone area and other, as required
Other tasks as assigned by the Program Manager, or other designated leadership
 

Basic Qualifications: 

Strong commitment to the educational mission of the Yellowstone Forever Institute
Professional experience in teaching, environmental education, or interpretation
College degree in the natural sciences, education from an accredited institution, or equivalent experience
Demonstrated outdoor leadership skills
Team player with excellent oral and written communication skills
Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, hike up to twelve miles on uneven terrain, cross-country ski/snowshoe (winter season), and work outdoors in all climate conditions common to the region while carrying a pack weighing up to 40 pounds
This position involves driving YF vehicles, therefore applicants must be 21 years of age or older and must hold and maintain a valid US driver’s license, and maintain a favorable driving record for insurance purposes.
The ability to pass and maintain a Department of Transportation medical exam
A satisfactory criminal background check are conditions of employment
Ability to represent YF in a courteous and professional manner
Ability to maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and park partners

Ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment
Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include nights and weekends when needed
Ability to represent YF in a courteous and professional manner

Preferred Qualifications: 

Working knowledge of Yellowstone National Park and the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem preferred
Graduate degree in a related field
Wilderness First Responder, Certified Interpretive Guide, Leave No Trace, and other related certifications
Experience teaching adults and children (aged 8 and older)
Current CPR and Wilderness First Aid certifications
Experience working in a non-profit environment

Compensation:

This is a seasonal, non-exempt position based in Gardiner, Montana. The hourly rate is based upon experience, with overtime paid for hours in excess of 40 hours per week. Affordable housing may be available for rent in Gardiner, Montana. Lodging is provided for programs based in the park interior.
