The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (NCMNS) is recruiting AmeriCorps members for Serving & Science: A STEM Future for NC.  The ultimate goal of Serving & Science is to engage a diverse audience in programs that inspire a passion for the natural world and teach valuable science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills needed to succeed in today’s world.  NCMNS already plays an important role in increasing the public’s science literacy by offering a variety of programs, exhibits, and experiences across three locations in the state.  However, this project will help us address community needs and serve all North Carolinians.  As an NCMNS AmeriCorps member, you will expand the reach of the museum by developing new programs, improving access to museum resources, and building community partnerships.  Each AmeriCorps position has a unique program focus, but all of our members accomplish the goals of Serving & Science while making a difference in the lives of students, teachers and families.  Details about each description are found on pages 5-12 of this document.

More Information About the Project

Serving & Science: A STEM Future for NC is rooted in the belief that economically disadvantaged youth can find a path out of poverty through a career in STEM. K-12 students, particularly women and minorities, are performing below their peers in STEM subjects. NCMNS AmeriCorps members can address these issues with the Serving & Science program. Through after-school activities, family involvement, and classroom teaching and support interventions, students will have improved academic engagement and social-emotional skills. This will positively impact their ability to pursue post-secondary education in STEM and their interest in a STEM career.
