Overview:
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Science and Stewardship (60% of the time)
- Serve as the curriculum, training and equipment lead for all NatureBridge Olympic science and stewardship projects.
- Work with scientists and compliance officers from the National Park Service, and other partner organizations, to manage and develop NatureBridge science and stewardship with students.
- Train educators in the facilitation of environmental science research.
- Promote and enhance scientific content, inquiry-based teaching competencies and facilitation of the Next Generation Science Practices amongst Environmental Science Educators.
Supervision and Staff Support (40% of the time)
- Supervise, measure, and directly support the performance of Environmental Science Educators.
- Support Summer Backpacking programs including: overseeing trip logistics, educator training, and program delivery.
- Hire and supervise the Summer Program Assistant.
- Hire and oversee science and stewardship mentors.
- Work with the education team to develop and refine curriculum and teaching resources in response to changing trends in environmental, multicultural and science education.
- Develop and maintain equipment budget; approve and submit program expenses in a timely fashion.
- Oversee campus teaching resources.
- Monitor weekly teacher/parent evaluations and address comments on educational content, program quality, and staff assessment.
- Implement program evaluation and grant-funded projects with support from the Education Director.
Collaboration
- Support annual fundraising gala.
- Ensure best practices and sharing of resources by working with staff from other NatureBridge campuses.
- Partner with local science/education agencies to support place-based relevant education and community collaboration and support.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience, Competencies and Education
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Required qualifications:
- Commitment to the mission of NatureBridge.
- Four- years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong leadership, coaching/supervisory, communication and project management skills.
- Experience teaching children of varied ages and strong pedagogical foundations in experiential education, inquiry-based learning, multiple intelligence theory, multicultural education and thematic teaching.
- Experience and/or strong interest in science education, environmental education and citizen science.
- Well-organized, self-directed and the ability to prioritize work.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to make decisions independently.
- Current Wilderness First Responder certification, minimum (or ability to obtain).
Desired qualifications:
- Master's degree or equivalent in education, science, environmental studies or related field.
- Experience in residential environmental education programs.
- Teaching Credential and/or experience in a classroom setting.
- Established connections to local, underserved communities.
- Familiarity of and/or working knowledge of natural and cultural history of the Pacific Northwest.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise up to 10 direct reports
