The start date can be tentative between August 28th 2017 and Sept. 4th 2017, however the earlier the intern can arrive, the better. We are looking for someone who is willing to make commitment to the program until Feb. 28th 2018.  (A six month program in total). The internship will teach the chosen intern a diverse set of tasks and skills for someone looking for career experience working with birds and/or in environmental education and/or in the non-profit sector. The intern will work from 8:30-5 Monday-Friday in August and September and 8:30-3 Monday- Friday October-February.

The intern experience will include:

• raptor husbandry (cleaning, food preparation, perch and aviary maintenance) including regular observations and associated data entry.
• raptor training (via positive reinforcement, empowerment training)
• enrichment for raptors including participation the IAATE monthly enrichment challenge
• programming for the museum and the raptor center
• preparing for our annual Alaska Bald Eagle Festival in mid-November
• helping the museum coordinator with specimen maintenance as needed
• helping the education & outreach coordinator to collaborate with other community organizations for winter events and activities hosted by the ABEF.
• other non-descript site maintenance such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, etc.

Qualifications for the position:

• An associate’s or bachelor’s degree (can be working toward a bachelor’s degree) in biological sciences, communications, education or equivalent in-field experience.
• Ability to learn and be confident with public speaking, working with the public and other organizations.
• Ability to work in 15-32 degree weather on a regular basis.
• Ability to collaborate with others and work as a team.
• Clear, honest and upfront communication skills with staff members and co-workers.
• Familiarity working with animals in human care setting.
