Overview:
Duties and Responsibilities
The Program Operations Coordinator reports directly to Director of Education and is responsible for day-to-day activities related to the successful operation of:
1. Administrative Duties
a. Supervise intern information desk duties
b. Manage program supplies and equipment care
c. Resolve schedule/resource conflicts*
2. Staff Housing
a. Manage chore schedule
b. Host house meetings*
c. Facilitate conflict resolutions*
3. Animal Care
a. Monitor intern care of saltwater aquariums
b. Monitor intern care of reptile enclosures
4. Volunteer Program
a. Manage/lead citizen science opportunities for the public
b. Manage volunteer database
As needed, assist with:
1. Education
a. Lead public & private programming*
b. Develop/modify curriculum
2. Conservation
a. Coordinate wildlife emergency responses after office hours*
b. Assist sea turtle interns with excavation events*
3. Assist with various tasks to facilitate summer intern program*
Schedule
Office Hours: 9AM - 5PM Wednesday – Sunday. Responsibilities with an asterisk (*) indicate after hours work required. Program Operations Coordinator is required to be on-site/on call to handle situations with (*) from Wednesday through Sunday, 7am-12am. Flextime will be allowed so that the work week does not exceed 40-50 hrs.
The Program Operations Coordinator reports directly to the Director of Education to receive weekly assignments and to report any urgent/important issues. Meetings regarding education and conservation responsibilities will be scheduled with each department as needed.
Qualifications
• Recent graduate from accredited college or university, with major in biology, marine
biology, environmental science, education, or related course of study
• Minimum 6 months experience in environmental education
• Excellent listening and communication skills, comfortable speaking to diverse groups of
people
• Computer proficiency with knowledge of MS Office applications
• Ability to be self-directed and work within a team environment
• Ability to work in physically challenging environments including long periods in extreme
temperatures and field conditions while keeping a positive attitude
• Ability to lift 40 lbs
• Must possess a valid Driver’s License
• CLEAN background check is required before selection
• Current First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Experience as an R.A. or equivalent leadership position desired
Term
The term of the Program Operations Coordinator is for a period of four months; May through August 2018. Flexible start and end dates. This position does require weekend work and being on call in the evenings.
Compensation
BHI Conservancy Program Operations Coordinator will receive a stipend of $1200 per month; this amount is pre-tax. Additionally, shared living quarters in the BHI Conservancy dorm are provided as well as all utilities including wireless internet, parking for a vehicle at the Deep Point Marina, and a weekly ferry ticket for trips between the island and the mainland.
Professional Development
Opportunities to work on your North Carolina Environmental Educator’s Certificate will be available. Workshops to prepare for graduate school and to network will be offered throughout the summer.
