Overview:
The Program Coordinator works as part of a collaborative team responsible for meeting program objectives, including positive participant outcomes and a welcoming experience. The Program Coordinator manages the day-to-day on the ground aspects of educational outreach programs and works as part of the summer team at Blueberry Cove and Tanglewood. This includes staffing, volunteer management, curriculum development, and programming. It is expected that this position demonstrates enthusiasm, cooperation, resourcefulness, inclusiveness, and creativity. The Coordinator is part of the Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove 4-H Center leadership team, collaborating with colleagues to effectively run the facilities and programs. This position also serves as a member of a statewide network of 4-H Camp and Learning Center youth development professionals.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- In collaboration with Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove’s Leadership Team, design, deliver and evaluate programs that meet the needs and interests of the 4-H Center’s target populations, and are aligned with the educational goals of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension mission and Plan of Work, positive youth development, and the Maine Department of Education Learning Standard.
- Support the Director by providing coordination and management of the after-school program and support the Open Air Classroom programs for Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove. Directly support the day-to-day management of summer programs at Blueberry Cove and Tanglewood including Day Camp, Residential Camp, Discovery Trips, and Leadership Programs.
- Coordinate and implement educational programs supporting local schools in outreach and after-school settings.
- Assist Director with staff training to meet the needs of the program (schedule, curriculum, safety and risk management, policies, etc.).
- Work with Leadership Team in supervision and scheduling of staff during program and non-program time, including projects, kitchen support, gardening, facility chores, composting, and animal care.
- During program seasons, provide clear communication with coordinating teachers, developing schedules, required paperwork, presentations to schools and parent groups, and student needs assessments.
- Develop new program opportunities, including specialized camp programs, workshops, and adult programs.
- Assist in the maintenance of program equipment and facilities including a challenge course, waterfront, gardens, ranges, and other program areas to meet UMaine, DHHS, and industry standards.
- Collaborate with other organizations to enhance programming, establish and maintain community relationships, and partnership opportunities.
- Commit to organizational improvement by identifying opportunities to improve, and recommending possible alternatives.
- Develop and maintain professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect.
- Utilize coaching and mentoring methods that provide an environment that is anticipatory, supportive, and encourages constructive feedback on performance.
- Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge/ Skills/ Qualifications
- Typically has the education associated with a Bachelors in education, adventure education, environmental studies/science, or a related field
- Approximately 2 years experience in outdoor/environmental education or related field
- Demonstrated skills and experience in effective leadership and staff supervision
- Work experience in developing and implementing environmental education programming for youth/schools
- Current Wilderness First Responder (or higher) certification (or ability to obtain)
- Competency in word processing, spreadsheet programs, and social media platforms
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong work ethic and desire to work as part of a dynamic, high-energy residential program
- Ability to maintain professional certifications as appropriate
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel in-state (reimbursement at the current UMaine rate)
Supervisory Responsibilities: The Program Coordinator is responsible for the supervision of temporary program staff.
Work Environment/Dynamics
Our organization consists of two sites: Tanglewood is located in Lincolnville, Maine, and Blueberry Cove is located in Tenants Harbor, Maine. The Program Coordinators will be expected to work at both locations throughout the year, as well as in local schools or other settings as programming requires. Some weekend and evening work is required. When programs are in session, the Program Coordinator shares the role of “Director on Duty” with other leadership staff, which includes overnight supervision responsibilities. Programs are frequently held regardless of weather, which means sometimes working in cold, wet, or “buggy” situations. We strive to create a spirit of community among the staff in the working and living environment at Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove.
Work Schedule
- The University of Maine Cooperative Extension's regular office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mon.-Friday. This role will require seasonal shifting of hours during school program seasons, summer camp, and specialty programs. The employee will work with their supervisor to establish a varied work schedule in order to meet the needs and requirements of the position.
- School program season is mostly a Monday through Friday schedule with some weekend duties.
- During the summer, this position will support summer camp programming and staff as a member of the Summer Camp Leadership Team in conjunction with the Director and includes the ability to live on-site.
