Overview:
1,000 Islands in Kaukauna, Wisconsin is seeking a part-time Assistant Naturalist to join our team! This position is responsible for developing, promoting and presenting public educational and recreational programs. This position will also supply support to other areas of operation including curriculum based program delivery and site management projects. The work schedule requires flexible hours, some evenings and weekends. This is a part-time position working 20 hours per week.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Develop, coordinate and present public education and recreation programs.
- Assist in the presentation of curriculum based programs.
- Develop and manage the budget for public programs including preparing grant applications to supplement the program budget.
- Procure of educational materials for Center programs.
- Provide input in the development of Center curriculum based programs and interpretation materials.
- Assist in developing marketing and public relations strategies and materials relative to public programs and the Center.
- Complete administrative reporting documentation as required by the Director.
- With site manager, provide monitoring and maintenance of Center aquariums, captive animals and taxidermy.
- Train volunteers for program participation and animal husbandry.
- Prepares material for submission to the Center’s Cat-Tales
- Assist in general operation of the Center during regular and after-hours operations as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
This position is 20 hours per week! Standard hours are Tuesday - Friday 9:00a.m. - 2:30p.m. One week per month the hours change to Wednesday - Friday 9:00a.m. - 2:30p.m. and Saturday 10:00a.m. - 3:30p.m. There will be some flexibility needed during the week, evenings and weekends for center needs and special events.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelors or Associates degree in Environmental Education, Elementary Education (K-8), or Natural Sciences.
- 1 year teaching experience or seasonal environmental interpretation experience.
- Demonstrated presentation capability at grade levels K-8.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work well with groups of all ages, volunteers and the general public.
- Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet, graphic design and presentation software. Familiarity with social media platforms desired.
- Knowledge of local flora, fauna and ecosystems.
- Direct supervisory responsibilities associated with this position include supervision of volunteers.
