Job Description
The City of Raleigh is seeking an enthusiastic Park Operations Coordinator to perform a variety of tasks in support of outdoor recreation at Lake Johnson Park. The Park Operations Coordinators work directly with full-time management and contribute to our team effort to serve the public. In addition to general park operations, this position will be tasked with assignments that include outdoor recreation, program development, logistics, and site preparedness. This position will serve as Essential Staff and supervise a facility and park in the absence of full-time staff. Lake Johnson Park is comprised of 350 acres of wooded park and nature preserve, a 150-acre lake, and two fully staffed facilities. The park provides access to park trails, programs, seasonal boat rentals, and private events. A successful candidate will coordinate staffing, manage task, and apply risk management / outdoor ethical practices while working with the public and in daily routines.
Duties and Responsibilities
Knowledge:
- Understanding of the value and application of outdoor recreation and nature education
- Understanding the use of a software applications to perform administrative tasks.
- Familiarity with City of Raleigh parks, facilities, and programs
Skills:
- Enthusiasm in working with diverse populations while displaying personal maturity, communication skills, and confidence in dealing with conflict resolution
- Evaluate, record, and correct issues related to park amenities. This may include performing equipment inspections, trail maintenance, and scheduling preventative maintenance
- Facilitate and coordinate programs with instructors, equipment, and participants. Topics will include but not limited to hiking, paddling, fitness, and nature appreciation.
Abilities:
- Work as a team leader in a fast-paced setting, while promoting a shared vision and positive workplace culture
- Work in an outdoor environment, including various weather conditions
- Properly collect and handle fees in accordance with cash handling policies and procedures
Typical Qualifications
Successful candidates should have experience working outdoors with recreation amenities, facilitation of programs, customer service, and working independently. A candidate should possess excellent verbal and written skills and knowledge of risk management practice in outdoor recreation venues. Applicants with direct experience in outdoor activities including hiking, paddling, or nature education are encouraged to apply.
Position Requirements
The candidate must be at least 18 years of age, able to lift at least 50 lbs, and traverse at least one mile over rough terrain. Successful candidates will obtain and maintain a City of Raleigh Driver’s Permit. The position requires the ability to work, at least 24 hours weekly, throughout weekends, evenings, and holidays. Weekday availability is required.
Additional Information
Employees in regular, recurring positions that require 1,000 scheduled work hours or more per year, whether these positions are full-time or part-time, are required to participate in LGERS. N.C. state laws require both the City of Raleigh and the participating employee to contribute to LGERS. Employees are required to contribute 6% of their total annual earnings on a pre-tax basis; LGERS establishes local government rates each year for City contributions. This position is LGERS eligible.
