Pennsylvania Sea Grant, a partnership of NOAA, Penn State University, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, is dedicated to promoting the ecological and economic sustainability of Pennsylvania’s coastal resources through the development of science-based research, education, and extension programs.  Pennsylvania Sea Grant is part of a national network of 34 Sea Grant College Programs.

Pennsylvania Sea Grant (PASG) seeks an experienced educator to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate education programming with a focus on ocean and Great Lakes environmental literacy.  This position will be responsible for developing and implementing coastal resource and watershed focused education programs locally and statewide that foster environmental literacy and environmental stewardship across Pennsylvania. This position will mainly serve to provide educational and professional development opportunities for teachers and environmental educators, but may also provide direct teaching experiences for K-12 students and classrooms, as well as non-traditional adult audiences, focused on issues relevant to the Lake Erie, Chesapeake Bay, and Delaware Estuary watersheds.

Duties of this position include:

• Providing leadership for the design, execution, analysis, and evaluation of major educational programs.
• Developing initiatives for the delivery of ocean, Great Lakes, and water science literacy programming for grades K-12 formal and informal education practitioners in Pennsylvania to address the education and workforce development goals of Pennsylvania Sea Grant and National Sea Grant strategic plans.
• Implementing educational programs using a variety of tools such as publications, electronic technology, group experiences, mass media, distance learning, individual advisement, and the like.
• Developing and nurturing relationships with teachers of underserved students.
• Researching and developing best practices and tools for teacher professional development in Great Lakes and water science literacy.
• Building partnerships to nurture an environmentally literate public in Pennsylvania that are informed by lifelong formal and informal opportunities that reflect the range of diversity of the state's coastal communities.
• Actively pursuing outside grants and contracts to support the program area.
• Researching and producing curricular kits in support of ocean and Great Lakes literacy.
• Developing organization support documents such as proposals, annual reports, statewide impact statements, monthly narratives, and the like as approved by Sea Grant Extension leaders and to satisfy the requirements of outside funding entities.
• Ensuring PASG’s educational programs are connected to state and national science standards.

Occasional weekend and evening hours will be required.  This position will require local and overnight travel in Pennsylvania, with occasional trips to meetings and conferences across Pennsylvania and throughout the US. The education lead will perform other related duties as assigned or requested and the program reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Required Qualifications:

• A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8 years of related experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience) in a field relevant to the programmatic responsibilities of this position, including, but not limited to, aquatic science, natural resources, conservation management, marine and coastal resources, science education, environmental policy or management, cooperative extension, adult education, youth education, teaching in a classroom, or conducting applied research and extending this to potential users through organized educational programs, or related fields.
• Demonstrated experience working with and facilitating cooperative processes with other agencies, community-based services, coalitions, local governments or organizations to address programmatic priorities and needs
• Ability to communicate effectively using a variety of methods and technology; and
• Ability to effectively work with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity.
• Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted Pennsylvania driver’s license.
• Computer literacy including Word, Powerpoint, Excel, email and web browsers.

Preferred Qualifications:  

• Master’s degree in a field relevant to the programmatic responsibilities of this position, including, but not limited to, aquatic science, natural resources, geology, planning, conservation management, marine and coastal resources, science education, environmental policy or management, or related fields.
• Extensive knowledge of principles, theory, and research in subject matter field and knowledge of adult and youth education related to that area of specialization.
• Experience with developing materials and trainings that meet education standards, especially NGSS, and a working understanding of MWEE (Meaningful Watershed Education Experience) (or similar) design and application is strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated proficient ability in project development and management, grant development and management, and documenting programmatic outcomes and impacts.
• Strong project management and interpersonal skills are essential to successfully fulfilling the responsibilities of this position.
• Proficiency in developing workshops and presentations, training educators, facilitating groups, and coordinating with a variety of councils, boards, commissions, agencies and stakeholder groups.
• Experience in grant writing and managing grants and grant-funded projects and studies.
• Demonstrated ability to work successfully within a team setting as well as independently on projects, grants and outreach across a wide range of settings and groups.
• Demonstrated experience in developing, planning, and implementing education or outreach programs for diverse audiences.  
• Communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels.
• Demonstrated ability of working effectively in a team setting with staff, constituents and partners with varying backgrounds, interests, and abilities in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
• Excellent written, interpersonal, and group presentation communication skills, with demonstrated experience in communicating science to non-scientists.
• Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to work independently.

This is a full-time, grant funded position. The successful candidate is expected to develop an extramurally funded program that generates at least 25% of their annual salary within three years of joining the staff.  Work location is flexible.  This position offers the opportunity for partial remote work but will require presence at PASG offices as needed. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
