Overview:

Job Title: OUTREACH MANAGER
Location: Indiangrass Preserve, Waller, Texas (just northwest of Houston, TX)

Organization Background: Since 1992, the Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) has been working to protect the prairie for people and wildlife while there is still time. We are a nationally accredited 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Houston, Texas, and a trusted leader in local land conservation. We are also the largest local land conservation organization, by acreage, in southeast Texas. Over 20,000 acres of the Katy Prairie are now protected. On the Katy Prairie in Harris, Waller and Fort Bend Counties, KPC owns nearly 13,500 acres and protects over 4,200 acres through conservation agreements with private landowners. In addition, KPC is now working to protect coastal prairie in other Texas counties and recently placed a conservation agreement on a 5,332-acre ranch in Matagorda County.

Position Description: The Katy Prairie Conservancy seeks an Outreach Manager to lead KPC’s community outreach programs on the Katy Prairie Preserve. Outreach includes overseeing and organizing volunteer programs and work crews that help maintain and improve KPC’s lands, and developing and implementing programs to encourage members of the public to visit the prairie and connect with nature.

Additional Tasks Related to this Position: Public Events • Develop and Implement programs to encourage members of the public to visit the prairie and connect with nature • Coordinate large community events • Oversee walking tour program, including training tour guides and developing audio and written tours, including sounds, sights, history, etc. • Supervise training classes and field trips for schools, the Texas Master Naturalists, and other interested groups • Assist with workshops regarding land management and environmental topics • Oversee Unplugged Adventures for families and the general public Manage Volunteers • Expand KPC’s volunteer corps • Coordinate volunteers for work/field days • Develop and implement a corporate workday program • Work with community groups, such as scouts, on conservation projects • Design and implement volunteer enrichment programs, including orientation, training, social events, retention, and communication • Coordinate volunteers for annual site monitoring duties Native Seed Nursery • Develop and implement plan for nursery with stated goals and objectives • Oversee nursery volunteers, who regularly attend work days to germinate, transplant, and plant native grasses and forbs as part of KPC’s restoration program • Maintain equipment and supplies as needed for nursery operations Outreach Programs • Serve as a subject matter expert on local flora and fauna, ecology, wildlife biology, etc. • Oversee other KPC outreach programs, such as the Nine Natives Program • Make community presentations and work with KPC volunteers regarding community speaking or other opportunities • Develop new community conservation programs as appropriate Facilities and On-Site Programs • Responsible for ensuring regular public access to Indiangrass Preserve • Work with President and CEO and Conservation Director to complete planning for renovation of facility at Indiangrass Preserve • Work with President and CEO and Conservation Director to oversee construction of facility improvements • Develop programming for Indiangrass Preserve, including programs to be hosted at the facility • Maintain exhibits and information to be viewed and/or distributed to the public Other • Performs other duties as assigned, including assistance with fundraising, events, and conservation activities

QUALIFICATIONS:  Degree in Environmental Education, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Natural Resources Management or related field of study desired. Familiarity with the tallgrass prairie/wetland ecology, restoration practices, local invasive plant species, and native plant propagation. Applicant must be willing to work in physically demanding conditions, after hours and weekends, as necessary, in all weather conditions to perform essential job duties. Must be able to physically lift, carry, and handle equipment, supplies, and other materials. Requires sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking for moderate periods of time. Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication. Visual acuity is needed for field work and to verify accuracy of written materials. Must have ability to work successfully under stressful conditions, and adapting to varying workloads and work assignments.
