Overview:
Under the supervision of the Director of Outdoor Experience, the Southeast/CRV Outdoor Educator supports the conservation and engagement mission of The Trustees. Specifically, this position will support the launch of The Trustees new Roving Outdoor Education and Recreation Program. The Outdoor Educator develops and implements recreational, educational, and public programming with a focus on getting new audiences outdoors. Leveraging the unique natural resources of a variety Trustees properties in the Southeast and Charles River Valley Region, s/he will engage and inspire audiences to get outdoors, understand their connection to the land, deepen their appreciation of place, and foster a stewardship ethic.
The Seasonal Outdoor Educator is responsible for planning, marketing, managing and/or execution of a robust seasonal schedule of outdoor programming targeted to children and families, adults, and outdoor enthusiasts at select Trustees properties in the Charles River Valley and South Shore/Southeast Region. Programming will occur at a variety of properties and includes but is not limited to pre-school through adult programs including nature-based educational walks, fitness hikes, and social networking and meet up events. All programming occurs outdoors. The educator will help increase visitor awareness of select properties and the Trustees in the targeted area and achieve participation and revenue goals.
The Educator will collaborate with other staff to coordinate programs with on-going property activity to support our long-term property management, resource preservation, membership and fund-raising goals. The Educator will function as a collaborative member of The Trustees’ statewide network of educators and interpreters, helping to develop and grow an organization-wide recreation and outdoor education program.
In This Role You Will:
- Develop and deliver quality public programming in line with Momentum (The Trustees 2023 Strategic Plan) goals of getting the next generation outside.
- Plan, market, and execute over 50 nature-based and recreation-based education programs for children and families at select properties in the Charles River Valley, Southeast, and South Shore region of Massachusetts.
- Manage content development, logistics, and safety while providing an excellent learning experience for families, children, and adults.
- Assist with the recruitment and training of volunteers
- Assist in the marketing and publicizing of all programs
- Manage program registration and data collection for programs
- Represent The Trustees in a variety of forums.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in recreation, education, environmental studies, or other relevant course of study.
- A passion for the outdoors
- Entrepreneurial sprit
- Excellent visitor experience/customer service skills
- Ability to work independently without supervision.
- Experience developing and conducting site-based educational or recreational programs in a non-profit, public, or private organization.
- Experience or a background working within natural or reactional spaces, nature education, ecology, and conservation.
- Experience developing place-based, play-based, experiential, inquiry-driven programs that draws on the unique identity with place and organizational mission.
- Proven leadership and management skills, an ability to lead, inspire, motivate and work cooperatively and harmoniously with fellow employees, volunteers, members and the public.
- Proven ability to complete assigned tasks and projects, meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
- A strong commitment to the mission of The Trustees of Reservations.
- The position requires a significant amount of outdoor work in variable weather and terrain.
- Commitment and personal passion for getting more people connected to the outdoors.
Certifications:
- The applicant should possess an active certificate or be willing to acquire American Red Cross CPR/First Aid or Wilderness First Responder Certificate.
Other:
- Valid driver’s license required
- Pass of the CORI and SORI check required.
- Flexibility to work nights and weekends is required
- access to a motor vehicle is necessary.
Organizational Relationships/Scope:
The Educator reports to the Director of Outdoor Experience. The Educator will work closely with all Trustees CRV and Southeast/South Shore property staff and the statewide Education Director.
Working Conditions:
Musts be willing to work outside during all weather conditions.
Ability to lift 40 lbs.

Hours, Salary & Schedule:
This is a part-time, Seasonal position (May-September) averaging 16 hours per week, including Saturdays and Sundays during peak season, evenings, and holidays, to be scheduled to accommodate seasonal programs and events. Ideal candidate will start in June 2021
