Position: Outdoor Education Instructors – Full Season
Battle Creek Outdoor Education Center, Clear Lake Camp, Dowling, Michigan www.clearlakecamp.org
Summary: Outdoor Education Instructors lead outdoor adventure and science activities for 5th/6th grade overnight school camp and for daytime groups of all ages. Instructors teach all activities and rotate into the dormitory every 2 – 3 weeks. Training is provided prior to camp.
Activities include but are not limited to week-long overnight dormitory supervision, meals in the dining hall, nature hikes, pond life, snakes, food chains, canoeing, archery, cookouts, orienteering, night hikes, team building challenges, high ropes, climbing tower, communication activities, group games, camp songs.
Essential Job Functions (note this is not an exhaustive list of the duties performed for this position):
- Provide responsible leadership and mentoring for campers. Strong classroom management skills are required.
- Live and work as part of a team, teaching both independently and with a partner.
- Participate in at least two meals per day with students, either by leading the meal or eating at tables with students.
- Work outside in all weather conditions.
- Work 30 feet in the air on the high ropes course and belay students on the climbing tower.
- Handle live snakes to teach a snake class.
- Lead all activities including science, adventure, teambuilding, pioneer life, outdoor pursuits, games, meals, and dormitories.
- Live on-site while groups are in camp, generally Monday – Friday.
- Provide a week of evening and overnight dorm supervision every 2 – 3 weeks instead of daytime teaching duties.
- Attend all scheduled staff meetings and training sessions.
- Represent the District and PESG in a professional manner by performing all job functions at a satisfactory or above level.
- Interact with co-workers, administration, students, parents, and the community in a positive, supportive, and cooperative ways.
- Performs other related duties, including special projects, as required or requested, consistent with reasonable expectations for the contracted position.
Qualifications:
- At least 21 years old.
- Bachelor’s degree required. Course work in elementary, environmental, outdoor, or experiential education, natural sciences, recreation, or a related field preferred for all positions.
- Experience working with children required. At least one year in a formal teaching setting and/or informal camp-type setting preferred. Experience with urban, low-income, and/or at-risk populations is very helpful.
- Drug screen and CPR/First Aid certifications required prior to starting work, at your own expense.
- Completion of the required Global Compliance Network online training modules.
- Demonstrated record of good attendance and punctuality.
- Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication.
- Must meet criminal history background requirements (requires FBI Fingerprint and SOARS clearance)
Physical Requirements:
- Continuous use of hands in order to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
- Ability to talk and hear.
- Ability to work outdoors in various environmental conditions.
- Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time.
- Ability to climb or balance, and stoop, bend, crouch, or crawl.
- Occasionally required to lift / carry up to 25 pounds.
Job Duration: The full 2016 Spring Season begins April 4, 2016 and ends June 10, 2016. Some additional opportunities available for summer and fall.

Compensation Information:
Non-Exempt, $70 per day for the first season. Potential increase for 2nd and 3rd seasons.
Staff housing is provided in either a private cabin or a private room in the lodge. Instructors must live on site while groups are in camp. Meals provided during training and when groups are in camp.
