Overview:
Do you love exploring the outdoors? Do you want to inspire the next generation of environmental leaders? Piedmont Wildlife Center is seeking multiple seasonal, part-time Outdoor Camp Counselors to join our team in Durham and Orange counties. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but we are looking for counselors to begin as soon as possible.
Overview: Piedmont Wildlife Center is a non-profit organization based in Durham, NC inspiring people to develop a positive lifelong connection with nature and encouraging active engagement in conservation. We accomplish this through a community-oriented approach to nature education, leadership development and conservation science. We offer year-round outdoor education programs including day camps, afterschool, and homeschool programs, as well as conservation-themed outreach programs with our resident Ambassador Animals and a citizen science project on the eastern box turtle.
Position Summary: Outdoor Camp Counselors will plan and facilitate activities for outdoor afterschool and day camp programs with themes ranging from swamp ecology to advanced shelter-building. Counselors are responsible for safely leading a group of ten campers through outdoor educational activities while monitoring the group’s needs and adapting plans to help all campers successfully engage in our programming. Whether a survival expert, environmental scientist, or outdoor recreationist, counselors should be passionate about sharing their unique outdoorsy skillset with campers, helping them develop their own connection to nature, and inspiring them to protect the natural world around them.
Our winter and spring programming is currently scheduled to run through May 28, 2021. Counselors typically work 20 - 25 hours each week with the following schedule: 1:15 - 5:45 pm on M/Tu/Th/F and 8:15 am - 3:30 pm on Wednesdays. We encourage interested applicants to submit their cover letter and resume even if they are only able to work 3 or 4 days of this schedule.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Create daily activity plans for your camp group and gather associated materials
- Facilitate outdoor camp activities focused on environmental education
- Supervise camper safety and enforce activity policies, including our COVID-19 protocol
- Communicate with co-counselors, program coordinators, and parents about program outcomes and camper behavior
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of local ecology or tracking and survival skills
- Childcare and/or education experience
- Leadership experience
- Basic experience with G Suite
- First aid certification preferred
Unique Considerations:
- Ability to hike at least 2 miles comfortably
- Excited to and comfortable with playing outside in all weather conditions
- Comfortable exploring muddy and swampy areas
Pay: $11-12/hr based on experience
