II Job Summary:
The Outdoor Adventure Camp (OAC) Manager is an Environmental Educator who is responsible for overseeing all details of the Nature Center at Shaker Lake’s (NCSL) spring and summer camps. This includes logistics like scheduling, registration, parent/guardian communication, monitoring supplies, etc. as well as staff and volunteer hiring, training and supervision. In addition, the Outdoor Adventure Camp (OAC) Manager ensures the camp meets all requirements from Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and American Camp Association for NCSL to maintain our certification with these agencies. As part of the Environmental Education team, the Outdoor Adventure Camp (OAC) Manager will also teach school programming primarily for preschool - grade 8, public programming for families and adults and camps for children in preschool - grade 8.
III Job Responsibilities & Duties:
Teach Environmental Education Programs (30%):
• Deliver programming to multiple school groups the year, primarily Preschool-Grade 8.
• Teach summer camp between June-August as needed.
• Plan or assist with public programming as needed for family or adult audiences. This might include staffing an event, planning an interpretive hike, hosting a lecture, etc.
OAC Administration (35%):
• Maintain all credentials required by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) in order for OAC to be a recognized Day Camp by the state of OH.
• Maintain all credentials required by the American Camp Association (ACA) in order for OAC to maintain ACA accreditation.
• Oversee all OAC scheduling details including camp theme selection, registration, staff assignments and volunteer needs.
• Communicate with camp families regarding general camp information, registration questions and specific camper needs.
• Manage the OAC budget by tracking purchases and revenue.
• Maintain OAC supplies (including archery equipment – training provided) and repair/replace items as needed.
• Work with the Director of Education to update OAC policies and procedures as needed.
Manage Summer Camp Team (20%):
• Hire, train and manage seasonal staff to lead Outdoor Adventure Camp (OAC).
• Assist the Volunteer Coordinator to hire, train, and manage OAC volunteers.
• During OAC season, respond to the day-to-day needs of the team.
Other Public Program Administration (10%):
• Oversee education public program scheduling throughout the year including registration, data collection, and communication with NCSL team members and external partners.
• Represent the education team at NCSL meetings focused on logistics, growth, or direction of public programs.
• Facilitate discussion with the education team as needed to ensure the team is creating quality programs.
Other (5%):
• Oversee scheduling of animal care and assist as needed (training provided).
• Maintain wildlife permits through ODNR and US Fish and Wildlife.
• Maintain good humor and apply professional, common-sense solutions to everyday challenges.
• Learn, meet new people, reflect, and take initiative to continue to grow in the field.
• Participate in staff meetings and events.
• Participate in NCSL signature fundraising events.
• Other duties as assigned.
IV Required Qualifications & Skills:
• College degree and/or work experience in Education, Earth Science, Life Sciences or related field.
• Motivation to continue to learn and practice education skills and natural resources content.
• Experience teaching Preschool through 6th grade in a hands-on setting.
• At least 25 years of age (ACA Standard ST.5.3.)
• Minimum of 2 seasons of administrative or supervisory experience in an organized camp (ACA Standard ST.5.3.) • CPR/1st Aid Certification (NCSL provides the training)
• NASP or USA Archery instructor certified (NCSL provides the training)
• Ability to interact with the public, parents/guardians, teachers and staff with tact, courtesy, and diplomacy
• Strong organizational skills, particularly with storing digital files and navigating registration databases
V Working Conditions:
• Position requires lifting up to 15lbs., frequent hiking up to 3-5 miles (sometimes on rough terrain), climbing stairs, kneeling, sitting, and bending.
• The workday often takes place outdoors along our trails with possible hazards.
• This position offers minimal remote/work from home opportunities.
• NCSL has taken many safety measures to protect the staff and public from the COVID-19 virus. Personal Protective Equipment is provided.
VI Compensation:
• $38,000-$40,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
