Overview:

Naturalist Interns present nature-themed, interpretive walks and talks and environmental education lessons in the Avon, Colorado area.

Gain experience working in visitor education spaces operating and maintaining a variety of locations, including:

  • Walking Mountains Science Center’s Mountain Discovery Center
  • Vail Nature Center
  • Vail Resorts’ Nature Discovery Center
  • US Forest Service Visitor Information Services 

This is a professional development position and Naturalists acquire skills and knowledge in Rocky Mountain ecology, environmental education, interpretation, public speaking, and community conservation efforts throughout their tenure. Naturalists receive NAI’s Certified Interpretive Guide training and other professional development opportunities as part of this position.

Naturalists rotate through a schedule working at different locations leading a variety of programs. Naturalists interact with and present to mixed-age groups, adults, and children’s groups from pre-K through 12 years old. Naturalist Interns may also participate in special community events such as the Fourth of July parade and the Vail Farmers’ Market. They may also contribute to Walking Mountains Science Center’s public outreach through its newspaper column, blog posts, and local television appearances.

Required Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for educating others about the natural environment while expanding personal knowledge of Rocky Mountain ecology;
  • At least three years of education towards a BA/BS degree in natural science, environmental science, environmental studies, education, or another environmentally-related field;
  • Experience with formal or informal education of children and/or adults;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Able to obtain current First Aid and CPR certifications before position begins;
  • Able to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends);
  • Able to hike up to 3 miles, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and lift up to 50 pounds;
  • Positive, self-motivated, organized, and creative individual who can work independently and as part of a team of approximately 15 people.

  • Desired qualifications: Specialized knowledge or interest in the creative arts or a natural science field (botany, ornithology, etc.), and Spanish-speaking.

Location: Eagle County, Colorado (based in Avon, CO)

Duration of Position: Two end dates of this position are available:*

  • May 20, 2019 to September 3, 2019
  • May 20, 2019 to October 28, 2019

*Please note: Opportunity for rehire for the winter season exists; Walking Mountains hires from the Summer Naturalist pool for the winter season (November 2019 through April 2020).

Compensation:  $300 weekly stipend plus housing for the duration of the internship.
