Overview:

Part-time (~28 hrs/week) naturalists may perform all the jobs assigned to full-time naturalists but with reduced hours. Part-time naturalist responsibilities are assigned by the center manager according to center needs, the individual's talents and numbers of hours scheduled.

  1. Gather information for, develop, and present educational programs emphasizing natural and cultural history and conservation issues as they relate to Cleveland Metroparks and the communities we serve.  Programs may be held at assigned reservations and off-site locations, and may include but are not limited to:
    • Community groups
    • Public programs
    • Roving interpretation
    • School groups
    • Special events
    • Programs in support of the Outdoor Recreation Unit, other nature centers and other divisions within the Park District
  2. Communicates natural and cultural history, environmental and park-related information through personal contact, telephone, social media, park publications, other written information and the media to the communities we serve, co-workers, peers and volunteers.
  3. May gather information for design, review and maintain temporary interpretive exhibits and displays in nature centers, trailside areas and throughout the Park District.  Researches, develops text and recommends ideas for interpretive exhibits in cooperation with Visual Communication and other divisions.
  4. May gather information for develop and review written interpretive materials including brochures, newsletter articles, signage, blogs, social media and other assigned writings or projects.
  5. Creates new/ participates in existing special projects specific to each nature center/reservation that utilize an individual’s strengths/ talents. Examples of special projects include bluebird trails, ecosystem restoration, volunteer coordinator and biomonitoring.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Biology (Field Biology emphasis), Ecology, Environmental Education, Environmental Studies, Geology, Natural History/Cultural Interpretation, Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation, or related field or equivalent. Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience involving public contact, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the natural history of the region, its relationship to local cultural history and awareness of conservation issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and speak effectively.
  • Enjoys interacting with and serving the public.
  • Willingness to work varied hours, including weekends, evenings and holidays.
  • Must have a good driving record (less than six (6) active points on driving record at the application stage of hiring process) and possess a valid Ohio driver’s license.
  • Must be a non-smoker/tobacco user.
