Overview:

Naturalist Interns present interpretive talks and walks, environmental education lessons, and sustainability outreach programs. Naturalists also staff and maintain visitor centers at Walking Mountains Science Center and our partner locations (Vail Nature Center, Vail Resorts’ Nature Discovery Center, and US Forest Service – White River National Forest). Additional programs are offered in partnership with Sylvan Lake State Park and the Town of Vail. This is a professional growth position and Naturalists develop skills and knowledge in Rocky Mountain ecology, teaching, interpretation, public speaking, and community sustainability efforts throughout their tenure. Professional development and NAI’s Certified Interpretive Guide training are also components of this internship position.

Naturalists rotate through a schedule working at various recycling centers and nature/visitor centers. Naturalists develop programs and lessons, guide hikes for multi-aged groups, present interpretive evening programs, and teach environmental education lessons for children pre-K through 12 years old. Naturalist staff “Zero Waste” events to manage recycling, waste diversion, and composting stations while educating the public about these initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for educating others about the natural environment and sustainability while expanding personal knowledge of Rocky Mountain ecology;
  • Experience with formal or informal education of children and/or adults;
  • Excellent oral communication skills;
  • Ability to obtain current First Aid and CPR certifications before position begins;
  • Interest in working flexible hours (including evenings and weekends);
  • Enthusiasm for working with hands-on environmental sustainability efforts including handling compost, waste, and recyclables;
  • Ability to hike up to 3 miles, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and lift up to 50 pounds;
  • At least three years of education towards a BA/BS degree in natural science, education, sustainability, or an environmentally-related field;
  • Positive, self-motivated, organized, and creative individual who can work independently and as part of a team of approximately 20 people.

  • Desired qualifications: Specialized knowledge or interest in fly-fishing, the creative arts, or a natural science field (botany, ornithology, etc.).

Opportunities exist for rehire for the winter season November 2017 through April 2018!

Compensation:

Housing plus $200 weekly stipend.
