Overview:
Are you passionate about science? Do you like working with kids? Do you enjoy working outside? If you answered "Yes" to those questions, this may be the perfect position for you. It is ideally suited for people with a good science background who have already been working in outdoor education. The Los Angeles County Outdoor Science School in Malibu is currently hiring a full-time science teacher starting in January or February. We are a residential outdoor education program serving Southern California students, and specializing in hands-on learning of ecosystem science concepts. The Outdoor Science School operates at two gorgeous locations in the mountains and on the coast north of Los Angeles, California.
DUTIES: Teach science to fifth and sixth grade students, using experiential, hands-on teaching techniques in the outdoors. The curriculum includes science concepts such as wildlife habitat, plant adaptation, ecosystem comparison, basic astronomy, geology, soils, human ecology, science practices, etc. Naturalists will also lead evening programs, provide occasional student supervision, and train and supervise volunteer cabin leaders. Other duties common to residential outdoor education programs may be assigned as needed. All duties are scheduled to be completed within a 40 hour work week.
QUALIFICATIONS: BA/BS in life science, natural resources (interpretation or education), environmental science, relevant physical science (geology, astronomy, etc.) or other comparable fields. Course work should include several life and earth science courses, and some field experience. Previous outdoor teaching experience required. First Aid/CPR certification. Must be physically able to lead teaching hikes in a semi-wilderness setting. Able to deal patiently and constructively with children and teens. Good personal and group communication skills. Ability to sing and/or play a musical instrument is desired, but not required. Willing to work irregular hours.
JOB PERIOD: Regularly runs September through June. Current position starting January 2017.
COMPENSATION: Starting salary of $22,040 per year, ($580 per week), increasing to a maximum of $28,025 in subsequent years. Housing included. Medical, dental, vision benefits. Paid training and professional development days. Twenty-three paid vacation days.
