Overview:
This position supports the Nature Preserve and Natural Resources Division. At the nature preserves and nature centers, this position develops and presents environmental education programs to groups of all ages. Assist with the care and feeding of exhibit animals, maintains and operates a public nature center, designs and constructs educational exhibits and interpretive materials, and assists with administrative duties and covering the front desk as needed. Position requires enrollment in, or completion of a BS/BA degree in one of the following: natural/environmental sciences, biology, botany, ecology, environmental education, education or related field. Applicants for Nature Center positions must have ability and desire to work with children in an outdoor setting and be able to hike 3-5 miles on unpaved trails. Current first aid and CPR certification and knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Piedmont region of North Carolina is preferred. Position requires a valid NC or SC driver’s license.
Employment dates: June 1 - August 31, 2016
Work schedule: Up to 40 hrs / week, including weekends, some evenings, and most holidays.
Primary job responsibilities:
- Assist with nature-based and outdoor recreation day camp programs, including canoeing, hiking, and various physical outdoor activities.
- Provide excellent customer service to nature center visitors, program participants, and camp parents.
- Facilitate canoe rentals.
- Assist with other nature center duties as needed.
