Overview:
Purpose
To provide engaging, high-quality, inquiry-based wildlife and conservation education to middle school students in the afterschool hours to local students while forming positive relationships with students and partnering organizations.
Primary Duties
- Conduct wildlife education programs for students in up to 8 different middle schools (grades 5-8) and potentially elementary students in schools, and virtual settings by either Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
- Candidate will be expected to follow an established curriculum teaching basic ecology in an inquiry-based learning format.
- Candidate must be a proven dynamic and engaging educator while also showing empathy-based skills to form positive relationships with students enrolled in the afterschool programs.
Other Duties
- Attend and supervise periodic field trips during the after-school hours as needed.
- Help assemble and/or pick-up supplies required in the classroom.
- Provide feedback on programming and classroom experiences to the Education Coordinator and Executive Director.
Skills/Qualifications
- Knowledge of and high degree of interest in wildlife and native ecosystems
- Willingness to handle live, wild animals with training if needed.
- Knowledge of Zoom and Microsoft Teams interfaces.
Education & Experience
- Experience working with students in an educational environment, preferably in environmental education, interpretation and/or natural sciences.
- Experience teaching in a virtual setting is a plus.
Physical Demands
- Moderate physical activity required, including carrying supplies (up to 35 lbs) and hiking with students.
School-year programs are conducted in the after-school hours (generally 3-6PM CST), Monday through Thursday, from late August to late May each year. Summer programs are conducted during the day, Monday through Thursday, from late May through early July. This position is grant-funded, and the schedule and available work hours are variable.
Paid training provided and periodic staff meetings will be required.
