Overview:
Job Description: Under general supervision, the Interpretive Naturalist develops, plans, and conducts interpretive and recreational programs and events. Promotes visitation and community awareness of the Park District and fosters connections with green spaces through a wide variety of interpretive techniques. Assists in staffing the museum at Chilo Lock 34 Park and creates a sense of welcome through hospitality and customer service. As an experienced interpreter, this person will be charged with developing, managing, and coordinating summer camps, senior citizen outreach programs, and other projects as assigned.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plans, develops, schedules, and conducts programs and events on the natural, historical, and scientific features of Clermont County for school classes, youth groups, senior citizens, educators, special interest groups, and the general public; develops lesson plans, researches subject areas, prepares supportive materials and displays, and obtains necessary supplies to ensure successful programs; keeps program attendance records and compiles data for analysis. Assists with volunteer events, special events, and outreach. Leads and coordinates projects as assigned.
- Manages the day-to-day and yearly operations of the summer day camps including developing and implementing schedule, training staff, and managing camp registration. Develops seasonal offerings for senior citizen groups, contacts adult living center, and schedules programs. Oversees, assigns work, reviews work performed, and provides instruction for staff and volunteers assisting with assigned projects.
- Assists in staffing and upkeep of the Chilo Lock 34 Park Visitor Center and River History Museum; greets visitors; develops tours, historical craft/skills programs, and children’s activities; gives presentations; answers questions, answers phone, direct visitors, and responds to visitor’s needs and concerns; researches local history; makes minor repairs; assists with exhibit changes and repair.
- Maintains cleanliness of programming spaces, office areas, and Chilo Lock 34 Park Visitor Center (including, but not limited to cleaning restrooms, rental shelters, sweeping and mopping floors, and emptying trash); maintains and organizes supplies used in programming.
- Creates and develops newsletter articles; develops program flyers for events; provides material for Park District website and social media sites; develops educational material for park displays, signage, museum exhibits, and information kiosks.
- Assists in maintaining animals kept in captivity for display to the public; feeds and cleans the animals and provides daily care; cleans the exhibits; reports problems; looks for signs of injuries or illness in animals; keeps records.
- Assists in the restoration and upkeep of park natural areas including removing invasive species, trail maintenance, plantings, picking up trash, cleaning kiosks, etc.; surveys, monitors, and records biological events within preserve and park areas; advises appropriate staff on suggested improvements.
- Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed; attends training and seminars, as directed. Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable PERRP safety standards that pertain to essential functions. Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance; may be required to work extra hours, evening hours, weekends and/or holidays as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences such as such as biology, geology, environmental studies or horticulture or a related field, and one (1) year of work experience in the interpretation field; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
