Overview:
Bachelor’s degree in science communication, natural resource interpretation, human dimensions in natural resources, marine science, environmental science, education, or another related field. Five years of experience in informal science education including program development and delivery. Two years supervisory experience or the equivalent is preferred. Work at an aquarium, zoo, park, nature center or a like institution with a combination of formal and informal education or interpretive programs is preferred. We will consider other combinations of educational preparation and experience.
Essential Duties:
Delivers informal marine science interpretation and education programs in-house, on outreach trips, and by videoconference. Participants include preK-12 students, adult groups, and general public audiences.
Provides project management for the development and implementation of interpretive and educational programs including planning, meeting deadlines, the delivery of end-products on time and budget, and providing program assessment. This position directly supports the Senior Education Manager in making sure that grant- and sponsor-funded programs meet deliverables and reporting schedules.
Assists with coordinating and integrating the functions of the Education Department with the Center’s Research, Visitor Services, Operations/Exhibits, and Marketing & Communications Departments. Specific work is required to develop programs that integrate the Center’s research programs into interpretive and education programs.
Works with the Senior Education Manager to develop cooperative educational programs with school districts, public agencies, and other educational institutions to further the ASLC’s education goals and mission.
Assists the Senior Education Manager and the Lead Exhibits Designer with the development of educational content for aquarium and outreach exhibits.
Collaborates in the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding of new Department staff.
Creates a collaborative and positive working atmosphere among all Education team members.
Assists the Senior Education Manager and other ASLC departments and external partners to coordinate and conduct ongoing interpretive and education training for new staff, interns, and volunteers throughout the year.
Assists in the continuing education and professional development of existing ASLC staff in regards to public education and interaction. Including program and presentation evaluation, coaching, and feedback. Will assist the Senior Education Manager with performance appraisals and personnel-related recommendations.
Collaborates in the scheduling of Education and Interpretation Specialists, interns, volunteers, and seasonal staff according to complex calendar needs.
Represents the ASLC and the Education Department in dealing with agencies, professional organizations, and the public, as needed.
Assists with fundraising and grant proposal writing.
