Overview:
Working collaboratively with National Park Service at Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAKE), the Outdoor Leadership Academy (OLA) is recruiting an Interpretation Technician to assist with the development and completion of resource interpretation and education programs and projects, including a wide range of formal and informal public and education programs and projects.
Description:
Working collaboratively with National Park Service at Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAKE), the Outdoor Leadership Academy (OLA) is recruiting an Interpretation Technician to assist with the development and completion of resource interpretation and education programs and projects, including a wide range of formal and informal public and education programs and projects. These will include hikes, lectures, demonstrations, field trips, workshops and activities. Venues will include (but not be limited to) trails, beaches, visitor centers and other determined in-park locations. Programs and projects will educate and inform the public about the significance and uniqueness of park resources, conservation and ecologically sound practices as well as the laws, rules, and regulations developed to protect park resources.
Compensation & Benefits: TBD
Park housing is available and rent will be paid by host park (Lake Mead National Recreation Area). A rent stipend may be available, if park housing is not available.
Project Timeline: Five Months, starting Feb
Specifications:
· Duty-stationed out of Boulder City, Nevada
· Occasional travel may be required to Katherine Landing in Bullhead City Nevada for park operation needs
· Five-day 40 hours per week work schedule, working both weekends and holidays.
· Overtime may be offered.
· Wear NPS-identity clothing (available through the Arrowhead Store). This will include polo shirts, fleece jacket, beanie and sun hat to be purchased by Dixie State University.
Essential tasks and duties:
● Serve as a frontline representative for Outdoor Leadership Academy and National Park Service
● Research scientific, historical, and technical resources to support the creation and delivery of interpretive programs
● Facilitate programs, activities and learning modules to educate diverse audiences on enjoying the outdoors, while recreating safely and preserving park natural, cultural and historical resources.
● Develop and conduct presentations for diverse audiences on natural resource management practices within the recreation area; Provide community members, visitors, and local constituents with information on park resources, conservation and ecologically sound practices as well as the laws, rules, and regulations developed to protect park resources
● Work in a variety of indoor and outdoor locations including, but not limited to trails, beaches, visitor centers and other determined locations in and outside of the park.
● Contact local community groups to engage in park activities and programming
● Collect field data and statistics to maintain documentation of activities for reporting purposes
Required Skills or Qualifications:
● Motivated, self-starter who is detail oriented;
● Flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities;
● Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse public in a variety of forums;
● Ability to speak English and Spanish conversationally, desirable but not required;
● Some college education, desirable but not required;
● Possess clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license;
● Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments in potential temperatures ranging from 40 degrees to 115 degrees Fahrenheit;
● The chosen candidate must have the ability to hike up to five miles on uneven, rocky terrain.
