This GS-02 Human Dimensions focused Biological Science Aid primarily assists with natural resources conservation outreach programming for Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, and cooperative tasks with the non-profit Friends of the Florida Panther Refuge. Core responsibilities of this position include: 

1. Interpretation and Education Programming 
Assist with public interpretive and educational programs, including guided walking and swamp buggy tours. Assist with lesson and public access planning. Assist with presentation design and delivery. Assist with the design, updates, and maintenance of interpretive brochures, kiosks, and exhibits. Staff booths at off-site festivals and events, including evenings and weekends as necessary. 

2. Social Media, Website, and Communications Management 
Manage media to engage the public in education about SWFL wildlife and resource conservation and the National Wildlife Refuge System.  Assist with Facebook page management, Flickr and MediaPro photo management, Constant Contact, EventBrite, and other website management.  Assist with mailings, newsletters, and public inquiries. 

3. Event Coordination 
Finalize planning for and implement logistics for at least three collaborative events- Friends Annual Meeting, Refuge Open House, and SWFL CISMA Invasive Species Workshop. Prepare forms and fliers, organize staff and volunteers, manage participant registrations, complete post-event evaluations and reports, and staff events on evenings and weekends as necessary. 

4. Volunteer Coordination 
Assist with coordinating and leading volunteer opportunities on the Refuges such as invasive species work days, trail maintenance days, native vegetation plantings, species surveys, and special group volunteer outings. Assist with coordinating volunteer recognition event at Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge.  

5. Natural Resources Management 
Utilize camera trap data and ArcGIS programming to manage interactive imagery access. Assist Refuge biologists with resource surveys likely to include and not limited to gopher tortoise burrow survey, eastern diamondback rattlesnake telemetry, red-cockaded woodpecker monitoring, swallow-tailed kite nest searching, the Christmas Bird Count, and invasive vegetation monitoring. Assist with physical removal of and application of herbicide treatments to invasive vegetation.  Assist Refuge staff with vehicle, facility, and trail maintenance tasks. 

The employee serves a Not To Exceed 180 Day Term, beginning on estimated date December 9, 2019 – at least May 29, 2020. The employee works 40 hours Monday-Friday with occasional weekend and evening work required. The employee is stationed at Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge headquarters in Immokalee, FL. Fully furnished housing on the Refuge is available as an employee rental option. Personal transportation is necessary; no public transportation is available due to remote living and working conditions. Work vehicle is provided by USFWS for official government use only. Candidates are required to pass a federal security background check, have proof of U.S. citizenship, and have possession of a valid state issued driver’s license. Candidates with natural resources experience especially in relation to education, communications, media, or public affairs are sought. Field experience including GPS technology, all-terrain vehicles, boats, trailers and ability to withstand Southwest Florida field conditions is a plus. An ideal candidate is hardworking, independent, creative, and comfortable presenting to all audiences. Candidate interviews and tentative selection are aimed to be made by October 1, 2019.  Final hiring decision and timing is dependent upon regional leadership approval and the candidate’s successful completion of a security background investigation.
