Overview:
Responsibilities of the Naturalist will include:
Assisting Lead Teacher in the planning and implementation of the day’s learning focusing on local native species, weather, astronomy, environmentalism, recycling, nature-related crafts, and plant and animal identification.
Providing education to young children (ages 3.5 – 5 years) in regard to local flora and fauna during the curriculum planning process and while exploring the outdoor classrooms reflecting a commitment to stewardship of the natural environment and utilizing the school’s campus.
Demonstrating confidence and competence in regard to risky play experiences for young children.
Maintaining a positive attitude while supporting emergent learning in an outdoor setting in all weather conditions.
Assisting with daily preparation and clean-up and with care and handling of program materials and equipment.
Attending appropriate instructor-training workshops.
Promoting school mission, goals, activities, and events.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university, and a background in science, art, or environmental education.
Teaching experience, preferably in an outdoor setting and with young children.
Expert knowledge of local flora and fauna
Ability to work effectively and productively as part of a team
Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 25 lbs. on occasion
Must feel comfortable standing for extended periods of time
Must be able to hike up to 5 miles
Must be first aid/CPR trained
Must pass fingerprinting background check
Outdoor recreation skills and experience a plus (hiking, climbing, forest games)
