Job Responsibilities:
Program Development:
• Implement an internship program that focuses on land management practices, ecosystem restoration, and stewardship ethics while directly aligning with NFF and USFS project goals.
• Assist in the implementation of a curriculum that meets WMSC program goals and objectives.
• Create teaching materials for summer internship program.
• Organize and maintain curriculum/lesson plan files and materials for high school programs and research projects that correlate with NFF funding.
• Participate in ongoing program development, evaluation, review, and revision.
Field and Classroom Instruction:
• Train and mentor incoming high school students during their 8 week NFF Internship.
• Work as a team member with other Instructors, Educators, and Coordinators.
• Plan, prepare, and teach scientific/interpretive environmental education lessons/programs.
• Train and mentor students in research protocols for USFS monitoring projects.
• Lead backcountry courses up to five consecutive days.
• Attend or conduct occasional evening and weekend programs and events.
• Provide occasional overnight supervision of students.
Program Coordination:
• Serve as a liaison between participating partner organizations, NFF and USFS to ensure all curricula and project work aligns closely with terms of the grant funding
• Collaborate with the USFS to establish needs for implementing the protocol for ongoing stream monitoring and other projects.
• Assist in maintaining database of student participation, assessment data, and evaluation.
• Participate in regular partner meetings and all-staff meetings, when applicable.
Operations & Risk Management:
• Assist with upkeep and maintenance of facility, vehicle, and program resources including first aid supplies, teaching supplies and equipment, field gear, specimens, and library books.
• Safely transport students in company vehicles.
• Maintain required medical certifications.
• Evaluate environmental conditions and manage risk accordingly (Follow Walking Mountains’ emergency protocol and current wilderness emergency medical procedure, if needed).
Professional Development:
• Attend professional development workshops that may include topics such as: USFS research protocols, land use management, stewardship in education, program development and management, service learning, citizen science etc.
• Maintain and develop natural history/ecology background knowledge for programs.
• Other duties as assigned, such as participating in fundraising and community events outside of normal work hours.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Science, Education, or an Environmental Science related field.
• Working knowledge of Rocky Mountain Ecology and current land management issues
• At least 1 year outdoor or classroom teaching experience
• Self-motivated, team oriented, creative and organized
• Current driver’s license and safe driving record for the past 5 years
• Working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
• Certified Wilderness First Aid
• Must be able to hike up to 8 miles per day with a 30 lb pack
Dates of Employment: May 29th – October 13th, 2017
Compensation: $225 per week stipend and housing provided
