Overview:

Farms for City Kids was started in 1993 with a mission to ‘…provide a stimulating outdoor classroom where urban youth explore new dimensions of learning…encourage[ing] teamwork and respect…and the satisfaction of facing and overcoming challenges….’  When the program started we were running just in the summer, now we run from the end of February until the middle of November with a new group of students coming every week.  It is a wonderful time to be part of a program that is teaching students where their food is coming from, how what they do today has a huge impact on themselves and the world around them, and that they can persevere!  As an educator you will lead groups of 5-9 students in a variety of farm based activities: milking a cow, measuring grain, planting seeds in the garden, washing cheese, collecting sap, making milk for calves, harvesting veggies, exploring the woods, making cider, cleaning the animals’ homes, etc.  Also as an educator you will have the opportunity to lead large group environmental education workshops, which explore more of the connection between life on a  Vermont farm and their lives back in the city.  Topics include; water conservation, impact of mining, where daily usable items come from, web of life, nutrition, how far food travels, etc.  Educators are encouraged to create and lead their own lesson plans to share with students.

Ideally candidates will have some experience working with students, ideally of diverse backgrounds in experiential education, a love for animals, plants, and/or the natural world around them or a background in farming/environmental science, be flexible to a changing work environment, and the ability to work some weekends and holidays.  Compensation will be based on experience plus meals when working. We are looking for someone to start the beginning of February and working up to 40hrs a week until the end of November, but are willing to work with qualified candidates to best fit everyones needs/schedules.
