Responsibilities:

Program Coordination

• Serve as the primary contact with the U.S. Forest Service to implement the summer Natural Resource Internship
• Coordinate with the U.S. Forest Service project manager to ensure the goals of the summer Natural Resource Internship support and align closely with the goals of the U.S. Forest Service and the criteria of the National Forest Foundation Ski Conservation Fund program
• Recruit and supervise 12 high school students, and one Field Assistant for the Natural Resource Internship
• Partner with U.S. Forest Service to ensure accurate implementation of field data collection protocols    
• Organize and maintain curriculum and lesson plan files and materials for high school programs and research projects that correspond with National Forest Foundation funded projects
• Annually evaluate success and impact of internship and related volunteer projects
• As time allows, work with staff to implement land stewardship on Walking Mountains properties; including invasive species management, restoration and habitat enhancement, climate change adaptation, maintaining outdoor teaching sites, and supporting volunteer stewardship and citizen science projects

Field and Classroom Instruction

• Teach the summer Natural Resource Internship for high school students, including some backcountry field days
• Integrate the Colorado Mountain College Environmental Science 101 class within the summer internship
• Teach Field Science Programs for K-12 youth from time to time during the academic school year   
• Organize and instruct land stewardship opportunities for volunteer groups and citizen scientists   

Program Development

• Continue to develop and expand upon the summer Natural Resource Internship as U.S Forest Service conservation and land stewardship priorities shift with time
• As time allows, develop and coordinate opportunities to engage volunteers and citizen scientists
• Create and implement projects and curriculum that meet Walking Mountains’ program goals and objectives  

Additional Responsibilities:

• Participate in all-staff required events and activities, and other duties as assigned  
• Maintain required medical certifications and incorporate Walking Mountains’ risk management procedures
• Attend professional development workshops and land stewardship agency partner meetings as needed  

Qualifications:           

• Bachelor’s degree in science, education, or an environmental science related field, graduate degree preferred
• Working knowledge of Rocky Mountain ecology and land management and stewardship issues
• 3-5years of outdoor teaching experience, including high school students and developing field science curricula
•  Excellent public speaking skills and willingness to teach  a variety of audiences
• Outdoor program administration and risk management experience
• Current Wilderness First Responder and CPR certifications
• Self-motivated, team oriented, creative and organized
• Current driver’s license and safe driving record for the past 5 years
• Ability to carry a 40 lb. pack, hike up to 10 miles, and perform physical labor in backcountry settings
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
