We strive to promote interest and education in the value and worthiness of our historic sailing ships as well as education, awareness and preservation of the earth’s oceans and welfare of all marine life. Traditional program activities you can expect to teach students are: line handling, climbing (aloft or out onto the bowsprit), manning the helm, navigation and setting/dousing the sails.

The position includes many aspects that vary depending on the season and current programming but will definitely include: Living, and working aboard a tallship, snorkeling, hiking, swimming, playing games with students, hanging out on the beach, attending festivals, and ship maintenance. Maintenance is scheduled throughout the year and is necessary in ensuring safe programing, it will be guided and can include: sanding, varnishing, painting, cleaning, replacing rigging and decking. As part of our programming, which may last between three hours and five days, you may teach about fish and squid anatomy, mechanical advantage, tide pools, knots, maritime history and the evolution of sail, physics of sailing, shark biology, water chemistry, ship construction, oceanography, stars, micro plastics, island flora and fauna, and kelp forests just to name a few. We do not expect our applicants to have all these skills just the desire to build upon their knowledge and experience while bringing their passion for sharing.

All staff who work for Los Angeles Maritime Institute assume an important role in working with our participants. Staff are expected to be leaders, role models and even a "stand-in" parent during programming. This responsibility carries with it certain expectations of how staff will act aboard and around participants, clients, other staff and parents. It is our expectation that staff members maintain a professional attitude, work as a member of team, enjoy working in an outdoor setting, and assist in creating a positive caring environment for all of our participants. The schedules of the vessels vary greatly. Offering a dynamic program comprised of single day experiences and residential programs we strive to reach all youth in new and innovative programming models. Please expect to work a varying schedule that includes some weekends and holidays.

Ideal Qualifications:       

• Experience working aboard a traditionally rigged sailing vessel
• Degree in Environmental Sciences, Education or related field
• Experience or desire to work in outdoor education, sail training, or informal education
• First Aid/CPR
• Lifeguard Certification
