Overview:

The Crissy Field Center is looking for an Environmental Educator, who serves youth by developing and delivering programs that focus on science, outdoor experiences, leadership, and environmental justice. The Environmental Educator is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with students, teachers, schools, and community partners, and delivering curriculum that is rigorous, relevant, and engaging. The ideal candidate is passionate about the environment, education, youth development, and the communities of San Francisco.

 

The primary responsibility of the Environmental Educator is to deliver environmental education programs to youth that are engaged in the following Crissy Field Center’s programs: School Programs, Project WISE, Youth Leadership, Camping at the Presidio, and Community Group Programs. The Environmental Educator leads activities that include hands-on science, media and art making, outdoor activities such as hiking and camping, community building, and leadership development. Programs take place at the Crissy Field Center, in parks, at schools, and in communities.

 

This is a benefited, seasonal position (August to May) that works 40 hours per week. The Environmental Educator will generally work a Monday-Friday schedule, with some mandatory weekend days, including 3-5 overnight trips that occur during the school year. The Environmental Educator reports to the Senior Specialist or the Manager of Community Services and Programs

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

 

This is an education position whose responsibilities include the instruction and mentorship of students and providing support to the School Programs, Project WISE, Community Group Programs, Youth Leadership, and Camping at the Presidio teams.

 

Works in partnership with other Crissy Field Center staff and community partners in delivering environmental science curriculum to youth.
Facilitates in-classroom activities and presentations.
Leads groups in outdoor activities such as hiking, team-building activities, and scientific field investigations.
Develops curriculum for field trips at the Crissy Field Center, in the parks, at schools, and in community locations.
Assists in the planning and facilitating of overnight camping trips with youth.
Facilitates small group projects.
Delivers programs in English and other languages spoken by youth participants.
Is responsible for the physical and emotional safety of the youth in programs.
Assists in the set-up and clean-up of lessons.
Performs administrative tasks and other duties as assigned.
Supports and facilitates other Crissy Field Center programs as needed.

Knowledge of environmental issues. Ability to make connections between environmental and social issues.
Ability to connect with diverse groups of youth. Interest and ability to make curriculum relevant to youth audiences. Understanding of issues related to the urban environment, as well as current local, regional, and global events that may impact the youth participants’ home communities.
Experience working with underserved communities in San Francisco, including high school aged youth.
Teamwork: Contributes to achieving group goals and supports the organization’s mission. Relates effectively to others when encountering difficult situations. Collaboratively develop curriculum and brainstorm lesson plans. Able to co-lead programs. Balances team and individual responsibilities.
Good Judgment: Exhibits sound and accurate judgment. Able to analyze calculated risks while prioritizing the safety of both staff and campers. Includes appropriate staff and/or community members in decision-making process.
Flexibility: Balances team and individual responsibilities. Able to work in a variety of outdoor and indoor environments, including a flexible work schedule that does include some overnights, as well as week night and weekend trainings. Able to change or revise lessons on-the-spot based on the group’s needs.
Ability to stay positive, energetic and creative during program planning and implementation.
Ability to take initiative and recognize what tasks need to be done.
Ability to receive direction and feedback in a constructive manner.
Ability to stay organized and pay attention to detail.
Leadership: exhibits confidence in self and others; inspires and motivates others to perform well.

 

Desired Qualifications:

High School Diploma or equivalent.
Knowledge of environmental science and a desire to become more knowledgeable in this area.
One or more school years teaching elementary, middle, or high school students in environmental science, ecology or biology curriculum.
CPR and First Aid certification. Training can be provided after hire if necessary.
Multilingual: Able to speak language(s) other than English that are spoken by Bay Area communities. Spanish and Cantonese preferred.
Experience teaching in informal and outdoor settings.
Experience, strong interest, or education in environmental education, child development, recreation, or other related fields.
A valid California Driver’s License. Willingness to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License.
Competent in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Drive.
Past Crissy Field Center and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy youth program participants are encouraged to apply (e.g. Urban Trailblazers, I-YEL, Project WISE, LINC).

 

Physical Requirements and Work Environments:

Ability to hike 5 miles on uneven terrain.
Work is performed in an outdoor and indoor setting, working primarily with youth during programs.
Work is primarily performed standing or walking with a backpack.
Frequently lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
Occasionally sits at a computer station up to 3-4 hours.
Regularly drives youth and staff in work vehicles.

 

Compensation

This is a benefitted, Project I position working 40 hours per week, from August to May. The hourly wage is negotiable and starts at $17.50 per hour. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance Compensation for this position will be commensurate with work experience, skills, and educational background.
