Overview:

On assigned days, intern(s) will be stationed on the beach at the edge of a designated Wilderness Area on Long Beach Island, NJ known as Holgate, one of the last undeveloped barrier islands in NJ and a productive area for beach-nesting birds such as least tern, black skimmer, and the piping plover.  There may also be networking and mentoring opportunities as well as opportunities with other divisions such as Biology and Facility Management.  Uniforms and training will be provided.

Duties: Assist in developing and implementing environmental education programs and curriculum, lead tours, meet/greet the public (and other office duties as needed). Independent projects may be possible as time allows, and college internship credit may also be possible according to individual institutional guidelines. Position will be 40 hours per week and includes weekend work.  Education intern (s) will be provided with free housing.

Qualifications:  We are looking for someone who has a passion for environmental education and a sincere desire to work with people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to help instill a sense of appreciation for the outdoors and an understanding the natural world. Successful applicants must have completed their sophomore year in college and be in a field of study related to environmental education, interpretation, public affairs or natural resource management. In your resume, be sure to highlight your knowledge of natural history as well as your birding, computer, social media and public speaking skills. A valid driver’s license, ability to tolerate the sun, heat, cold, wind, biting bugs, and humidity is a necessity.  High motivation, flexibility and a good sense of humor are also desirable attributes.  This is an unpaid position.
