Introduction

Join a passionate and positive team in developing and delivering education and outreach lessons and materials for water resources and solid waste programs while living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Applicant will gain experience in public speaking, giving tours and educating all ages, including regional K-12 youth. Also assist with fieldwork in water quality monitoring and wetland restoration.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for developing, organizing, and executing environmental education lessons at Spokane County water and solid waste facilities, in classrooms, and at community events. Audiences range from K-12 to adult groups and content is focused on water conservation and waste reduction. This position will also deliver tours of Spokane County water and solid waste facilities. Work is performed independently, with instruction or assistance provided as new or unusual situations arise.

Examples of Duties

  • Initiate ideas and contributions to the programs
  • Publicly represent Spokane County Water Resources, Stormwater Utilities and Solid Waste programs
  • Set up and tear down outreach table/displays
  • Lead indoor and outdoor educational activities for K-12 and adult groups
  • Lead educational activities over conferencing platforms (Zoom, TEAMS, Google Meet, etc.) as needed, including troubleshooting hardware and connectivity issues
  • Create digital content for teaching remotely, whether in person or as a self-paced lesson.
  • Give facility tours
  • Develop educational activities that meet relevant Next Generation Science Standards
  • Update lesson plans 
  • Create materials such as lesson plans, brochures, flyers and posters. Adobe Creative Suite and/or Canva experience preferred.
  • Create and publish professional content for social media platforms
  • Respond to customer inquiries 
  • Effective and efficient use of time and resources
  • Assist and collaborate with the Environmental Services staff to meet deadlines and deliver excellent service to County residents.
  • Follows safe working practices and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned such as data entry and word processing.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be at least 20 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Associate's Degree in Education, Environmental Science, Biology, Sustainability, or a closely related field AND one (1) year of experience teaching basic education OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • License:  Valid WA State driver's license at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.

Selection Factors

  • Knowledge of methods of teaching and public speaking to groups
  • Knowledge of the use of technology for instructional purposes and experience in teaching.
  • Knowledge of effective listening and communication techniques, and conflict resolution techniques.
  • Skilled in the use of standard office equipment including personal computers and software related to job duties
  • Skilled in preparing reports and maintaining statistical information
  • Skilled in compiling and evaluating data for program cost analysis. 
  • Skilled in the use of Adobe Creative Suite and/or Canva experience. Preferred, not required.
  • Skilled in the running of a social media campaign. Preferred, not required.
  • Ability to arrive to work on time and work consistently and productively.
  • Ability to teach and supervise adult and youth in a classroom setting or an outdoor setting.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with colleagues in an innovative team-oriented program to maintain and ensure program development.
  • Ability to gain the interest, respect, and cooperation of students.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to evaluate situations accurately and take effective action.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and judgment and make decisions within the scope of assigned authority.
  • Ability to work with a diverse, multi-level group of students.
  • Ability to track statistics and manage the scheduling of programs and classes.

  • Ability to follow work direction.
  • Ability to lift up to 45 lbs.
