DIVISION INFORMATION:

The mission of the North Carolina Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of North Carolina’s aquatic environments. This mission is achieved by attracting, retaining and developing a world class team of professionals; providing visitors with outstanding exhibits, experiences and customer service;  practicing sustainability, internal customer service and fiscal responsibility; and working to save and restore aquatic species and habitats.

The North Carolina Aquariums’ Jennette’s Pier is located in Nags Head, NC on 6 acres of prime oceanfront property overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.  The 16,000 square-foot pier house and 1000 foot long fishing pier with three wind turbines is a platinum LEED certified facility that demonstrates sustainable design to the nearly 200,000 guests it attracts annually.  This unique educational facility offers a variety of programs, interactive and live animal exhibits, recreational fishing opportunities, public access to the beaches and a platform for ocean observing and marine research.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

Reporting directly to the Education Curator, this position is responsible for presenting educational programs to pier visitors, to school groups and special interest groups.  The Educator will present programs on environmental and marine science topics, prepare printed materials, and utilize technology and A/V equipment to conduct programs.  In addition to in-house programs this position is responsible for developing and teaching outreach programs.  Outreach program job duties include preparing and presenting age-appropriate STEAM based school programs; serving as a resource for teachers and community members, evaluating education programs for effectiveness; and training, supervising and evaluating interns, volunteers, and seasonal education staff.  This position must also work with the Education Curator to develop and implement summer camp programs.  This position works cooperatively with other departments to achieve the overall mission of the NC Aquariums.  Evening, weekend and holiday work is required. Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

In order to qualify for this position you must meet ALL the following KSA's listed below:

Experience developing and presenting effective and engaging public programs in an informal setting, in an aquarium, zoo, nature center, or summer camp.
Experience working with children in an aquatic environment, with skills such as: kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, lifeguarding, surf instruction and/or fishing. 
Experience in educational program design and assembly related to environmental or aquatic sciences. 

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from a four year college or university with a major in Biology, Zoology, Botany or other natural science curriculum related to the area of assignment and one year of experience in a natural science field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
