Overview:
The Maria Mitchell Association (MMA), a science and history-based nonprofit organization on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, seeks a full-time, year round Education Coordinator to help manage our Award Winning Summer Discovery Programs and to assist with the development and implementation of other educational initiatives throughout the school year. This position reports to the MMA’s Director of Education.
The MMA’s Summer Discovery Programs are science-based, outdoor adventure and environmental learning experiences for Nantucket residents and visitors ages 3.5 – 16 years. Voted Best Children's Activity on Nantucket 2017, 2018, and 2019!
Discovery Program Responsibilities:
- Oversee hiring and training of education interns with help from the Director of Education
- Stay up to date and ensure compliance with state and local regulations for camp programs
- Serve as the immediate supervisor for education interns, plan schedules and class destination assignments, and ensure they are providing fun, educational and safe outdoor experiences for children
- Maintain and/or complete all required weekly paperwork including medical forms, sign-in sheets, etc
- Visit program sites around the island at least twice per week to check in on interns and campers
- Work with the Director of Education to develop and maintain annual budget for Discovery Programs
- Manage camp registration system and website updates
- Serve as emergency fill-in for education interns and aquatics supervisor as needed
- Review weekly lessons plans and submit requested changes to interns with help from the Director of Education
- Ensure interns are using and maintaining equipment properly, report any broken equipment and reorder supplies as needed
- Observe and evaluate teachers in the field
- Assist parents and guardians with program registration as needed
- Request permission to property owners and ensure site visits have been authorized
- Arrange for seasonal transportation ie: bus lease and ferry reservations for Summer Discovery program
- Work with community partners to schedule special programs for camp groups including kayaking with Nantucket Community Sailing, Shearwater Cruises, kayak rentals with Sea Nantucket, etc
- Maintain teacher work area and class supplies
- Design new and/or improve existing educational resources for interns and staff
- Help plan and maintain the MMA Giving Garden between May and September
- Plan and lead Winter and Spring Discovery Camps with the Director of Education or other education staff
- Assist with dorm oversight and orientation activities
- Help maintain education vehicles by ensuring they cleaned and washed regularly, gas is filled, and all required inspections and oil changes are complete
School Program Responsibilities:
- Work with Education Director to imagine and develop new educational opportunities for preschools, kindergarten classes, afterschool programs, and more
- Work with local schools to design and schedule classroom programs, field trips and site visits with an emphasis on Pre-K and Kindergarten but, continuing through Grade 4
- Assist the Director of Education or other education staff with the development and facilitation of school programs for older children as needed
- Collaborate with the Nantucket Community School and other local partners to offer at least one six-week afterschool series each fall/winter and winter/spring semester
- Plan and lead the 3rd Grade Enrichment Cluster series at the Nantucket Intermediate School
Other:
- Assist in planning, design activities, an attend special events including the Nantucket Science Festival, Maria Mitchell Birthday Party, and others as needed
- Develop teacher resources for all year-round teaching efforts to be available for staff, interns, and public school teachers
- Promote science education within the community
- Assist in grant writing as requested by the Director of Education
- Plan and lead special programs in the museum and classroom space such as story hours, birthday parties, overnight programs, etc.
- Help with animal care as needed
- Help to train and manage education department and museum volunteers
- Help to ensure classroom and museum space is clean and ready for public viewing at all times
- Help with other organizational tasks as needed such as dump runs, campus cleaning, etc
- Be an ambassador for the MMA by promoting the organization within the Nantucket community and participate in volunteer activities that support partner organizations and build community support
Benefits:
Starting salary: $33,000- $40,000 depending on experience with generous benefit package and potential housing opportunity
