Overview:
The Greenway Education Program engages 4th-12th grade students in classroom lessons, field study trips, service-learning volunteer restoration events, special events, and a paid internship for high school-aged youth. Curriculum topics include forest ecosystems, salmon, land use, and biodiversity. The Education Associates will be integrally involved in implementing programming and supporting restoration events for community volunteers.
This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about learning and teaching about the natural world, and who is outgoing and organized.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Fall/Spring: Teach classroom lessons, lead field trips, facilitate service-learning stewardship events, and provide education at special events.
- Winter: Provide event leadership and education at Saturday volunteer events. Support other Greenway Trust efforts in the Snoqualmie Valley, Middle Fork, and Upper Yakima Basin.
- Summer: Lead a summer high school internship program. Facilitate stewardship events with summer camp groups.
- Field Base Support: Assist with the Greenway Trust’s field base organization and maintenance.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Represent the Greenway Trust at special events.
- Communicate with teachers about upcoming programming.
- Assist in updating and creating education materials.
- Assist in tracking of program metrics in the Salesforce database.
- Assist in managing the Greenway Trust’s photo library.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated experience teaching a diverse group of students both in and out of the classroom.
- Proven personal initiative and ability to multitask, prioritize, use good judgement, problem solve, and work effectively both independently and as a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to hike several miles and serve outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills and detail-oriented organizational skills.
- Members must be at least 18 years old on first day of service.
- Ability to acquire, upon sponsorship, a Wilderness First Aid certification (will be provided as part of Greenway Trust training).
- Must provide personal transportation to sites across King County.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and the ability to drive Greenway Trust vehicles.
- Must successfully pass a criminal history background check.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident alien.
- Must successfully pass a criminal history background check.
- Willingness to store teaching some teaching materials at home.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- At least one year of teaching experience.
- Knowledge of Pacific Northwest ecosystems, flora and fauna.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree.

COMPENSATION
WSC provides a living stipend of $1,450 (before taxes). The Greenway Trust provides mileage reimbursement at the current state rate for approved personal vehicle use and an ORCA bus card.

LOCATION and SCHEDULE
Based primarily out of the Greenway Trust’s office in downtown Seattle, with frequent travel to schools in King County, Tiger Mountain and Lake Sammamish State Park in Issaquah, and other locations in the Greenway.
October 1, 2019 through August 15, 2020. The position operates on a Monday through Friday schedule. (Exception: the position will shift to a Tuesday-Saturday schedule mid-November through mid-March).
These positions are contingent on successful funding from the Washington Service Corps program.
