Overview:
The Crissy Field Center in San Francisco is looking for an Education and Youth Media Specialist, whose primary responsibilities are to develop, coordinate, and deliver relevant and rigorous education programs to youth, through project-based learning and digital media. Programs are delivered in the national park and other public spaces, as well as in our participants’ home communities.
This position specializes in delivering multidisciplinary education curriculum with an emphasis on digital media and youth development. Creativity, flexibility, a passion for healthy communities, and the ability to work with a diversity of groups and individuals are the foundations of this position. The programs implemented by this position will meet the mission of the Crissy Field Center and take advantage of the rich natural and cultural resources in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and participants’ home communities.
This is a full-time benefitted position with a Tuesday-Saturday or Monday-Friday schedule, depending on program needs. This position also staffs several overnight programs throughout the year.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Curriculum Development and Delivery: Develops and delivers multicultural environmental education curriculum. Develops and delivers programs that address social and environmental issues for all Crissy Field Center programs areas, including Youth Leadership, School Programs, Summer Camp, and Community Programs. Develops and delivers multicultural media curriculum. Creates videos, web content and other media, depending on the needs of youth and the program needs. Works within a team setting to facilitate programs in a variety of settings and on a variety of topics. Facilitates outdoor activities such as hiking, field studies, and overnight camping trips, using the national parks as a powerful outdoor classroom.
- Program Coordination: Coordinates education programs, including communications with staff and partners, scheduling, logistics, and staffing. Collaborates with teachers, students, National Park Service staff, interns, community partners, and other media organizations to create programs. Tracks program statistics and writes reports. Assists with evaluations.
- Management and Maintenance of Media Lab: Manages the Crissy Field Center media lab classroom and related equipment (computers, iPads, camera and sound equipment, etc.), Purchases and maintains technical equipment, hardware, and software. Trains staff, interns, and youth on media lab equipment.
- Supervision: Supervises, trains and mentors seasonal staff, summer interns, and volunteers at varying times. Responsible for driving youth in 15 passenger vans.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Youth Development. Understanding of youth development approaches, ability to deliver youth leadership programs, and experience mentoring young people
- Media. Familiar with hardware and software, sound and video editing, and educational software.
- Multicultural Environmental Education. Ability to connect with wide range of youth with different backgrounds such as socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, gender identity
- Equity and Inclusion. Experience working with communities that national parks have struggled to engage previously, such as communities of color, LGBTQ communities, people with disabilities, and low-income communities.
- Curriculum Development. Ability to develop an interdisciplinary lesson plans and curriculum that incorporates both park and community resources
- Social Justice. Ability to incorporate relevant social justice and youth justice issues into programming.
- Computer Skills. Competent in the use of Microsoft Office and Google suites, Adobe Creative Programs, Basic Web Knowledge. Experience with media, audio/visual technology and video editing/production. Proficient with PC and Mac Based computer technology, and audio/video production software such as Final Cut Pro
- Teamwork, flexibility, interpersonal skills, communication skill, dependability, and sound judgement
Desired Education and Experience:
- Three years combined experience in teaching, media making with youth, digital arts, working with different technologies (robotics, engineering software, etc.) curriculum development, youth development
- Three years combined experience working with children, youth, and families in communities of color, communities with marginalized identities, mixed socio-economic status in the Bay Area or other urban areas
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Education, Digital/Media Arts, Computer Sciences, child and adolescence development Ethnic Studies, Parks, Recreation and Tourism, Urban Studies or related preferred
- Background and/or interest in social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion work
- Interest or experience in art and science education
- At least one-year mentoring and/or supervising middle school or high school aged youth
- Bilingual or multilingual with language(s) spoken in the Bay Area- Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Russian preferred
- CPR and First Aid certification (can assist once hired)
- Valid CA Driver’s license and clean driving record. Willingness and ability to obtain a Commercial Class C Driver’s License with a passenger endorsement
Physical Requirements and Work Environments: Ability to walk 5 miles on uneven terrain. Work is performed in an outdoor and indoor setting, working primarily with youth during programs. Work is primarily performed walking and standing. Frequently lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally sits at a computer station up to 3-4 hours.

This is a full-time position with an excellent benefits package.
The salary for this position will be commensurate with work experience, skills and educational background.
