Under the supervision of Ten Strands’ Chief Executive Officer, the Director of School District and Community Partnerships will take an innovative, collaborative approach to carry out a statewide initiative to help districts create and implement environmental literacy plans. The Director will initially build out a demonstration program, focused on achieving equity and access for historically marginalized students to standards-based environmental literacy instruction including classroom, outdoor, and out of school environmental learning experiences. With a particular emphasis on school districts primarily serving students of color and students from low-income households, the Director, in collaboration with other Ten Strands staff, partners, and consultants, will pursue the following:

• Collaborate to support California school district leaders to create districtwide environmental literacy plans that are integral to their academic priorities in core areas such as science, history–social science, English language arts, and health.
• Connect school districts with environment-focused community partners to access subject matter expertise, provide outdoor learning experiences, and develop culturally-relevant resources to support academic priorities and environmental literacy goals.

Applicants Who Best Meet Our Needs For This Position Have The Following Qualifications:

• At least seven years of applicable teaching and administrative experience in the formal K–12 school system or equivalent experience working with K–12 school systems through the nonformal education sector, and familiarity with the field of environmental and outdoor science education through coursework, direct program delivery and service, and/or volunteer work.
• Knowledge of and experience planning and implementing standards-based instruction—working knowledge of the Common Core State Standards, California Next Generation Science Standards, California History–Social Science Standards, and familiarity with California’s Environmental Principles & Concepts.
• Experience working with district leaders, preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated experience bringing groups together to support districtwide planning and the ability to affect change at school district level.
• Deep knowledge and understanding of equity and cultural relevance in education for historically marginalized students, and demonstrated promotion of both within past work experience.
• Excellent leadership skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively, authentic listening, self-starting and self-managing, empathy and respect for others, and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
• Strong marketing, communications, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders across cultures.
• Familiarity with California state government operations, policies and procedures, and educational improvement efforts in California.
• Skilled in budget preparation and fiscal management. Knowledge of local, state, and federal funding sources. Knowledge of local control accountability plans (LCAPs) and the local control funding formula (LCFF).

Salary is competitive and will be based on experience. This position is full-time, salaried, and exempt. Duties are performed in a home office or offsite location at community partner, district, or school sites, and the Ten Strands office. This position can be based anywhere in California. The Director of School District and Community Partnerships will travel statewide 30–50%.
