Overview:

The Director of Education and Training will welcome the challenge of developing and expanding education curriculum and messaging, training offerings and field-based programs to elevate and accomplish the Center’s mission.

The right candidate is deeply connected to the outdoors and its long-term protection. The Education and Training Director is keenly aware of the changing needs of the outdoors’ space and people’s connection to nature. A lens for creating education/training that will engage both current outdoor users along with newer populations is necessary. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Manage long-term, strategic organizational education/training initiatives
  • Collaborate with land managers (federal, state, and local) and key stakeholders to develop and implement inclusive education, training, and citizen science efforts for all visitors to public lands 
  • Lead field-based outdoor programming and training ranging from single to multi-day outings
  • Manage and provide direction for the Center’s tiered training structure including curriculum revision and development
  • Monitor implementation of programs, evaluate program effectiveness, and document success
  • Provide direction for remote, mobile education teams to offer targeted programming nationally
  • Implement strategies that maximize alignment between training, education and field programs
  • Direct and execute Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives specifically pertaining to education and training efforts for Leave No Trace

Skills and Qualifications

  • Degree in resource conservation, natural resource management, or similar field recommended or demonstrated experience in these fields
  • Knowledge of land management agency structure, operations, and culture
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing effective education, training, and other initiatives focused on public lands
  • Experience working with diverse populations 
  • Deep knowledge of Leave No Trace skills, techniques, and practices for different recreational activities and environments
  • Expertise in evaluating the effectiveness of programs, and the skills to adjust programs to make them more impactful
  • Strong interpersonal skills including communication, leadership, and teamwork
  • Creative thinker with the ability to develop or seek out innovative approaches and strategies to meet goals and objectives
  • Must be able and comfortable carrying a pack and living in the out-of-doors for multiple consecutive days

Salary range: $60,000 - $80,000 annually and will be negotiated based on commensurate skills and experience. A flexible schedule and a great work/life balance are part of our culture. Excellent 100% covered health, retirement, and time-off benefits are included.

Work location: Leave No Trace is based in Colorado; however, after sufficient in-person on-boarding, remote work is an option with some in-person time required in Boulder, Colorado.
