Overview:
Cal-Wood has provided residential environmental and outdoor education experiences to hundreds of thousands of Coloradans since 1982 at our 1,200-acre classroom located west of Boulder Colorado. Our mission is to connect children and families to the Colorado Mountains through our Residential Science School Programs, Summer Camps, Latino Family Camps, Middle and High School Programs and through Wildfire Research Programs. Our high quality programs have received several awards for serving linguistically diverse audiences.
In all of our programming, Cal-Wood incorporates best practices of environmental and STEM education. We break down socio-economic and cultural barriers for nature-based learning, we model conservation and stewardship and we connect with English Language Learners through innovative and differentiated instruction through Sheltered English instruction integrating language and content instruction.
2020 was the hardest time in the history of Cal-Wood due to pandemic program closures and a wildfire that burned more than half of Cal-Wood's 1,200 acres. Moving forward, we plan to transform Cal-Wood into a field laboratory where students and scientists can learn and study wildfire behavior, fire ecology, restoration, and mitigation.
The Director of Education oversees our residential school programs, summer camps, Latino Family camps, and other educational programs. The Director must have extensive knowledge of personnel management (including coaching 8 instructors and 3 coordinators), program management, marketing, program evaluation, and partnership building skills.
Because our main science program serves schools, the director must have knowledge of elementary, middle, and secondary education, science/environmental education teaching techniques, curriculum development, knowledge of educational standards, evaluation methods, science/conservation/environmental education, and natural resources.
This is a leadership position, which means it includes assisting the Executive Director with annual planning, budgeting, participating in some board meetings, and taking part in the decision making about the future of Cal-Wood.
