About Us
We are an entrepreneurial nonprofit that believes California has the capacity to ensure that every student develops the knowledge, skills, and ability to make informed decisions about environmental issues facing our communities and our world. We work collaboratively to bring California schools, environmental education providers, teachers, parents, and students together to ensure a thriving planet for future generations.
We foster efforts to infuse environmental themes into core subjects, and empower teachers to use the environment as a context for learning in core subject areas, e.g., science, history-social science, mathematics, English language arts, and more. We believe all California students deserve a high-quality education that promotes achievement, health, and wellbeing, and we have a unique opportunity currently to ensure that happens.
We are looking for a Director of Curriculum who will be responsible for a new program focused on developing standards-based, K–12 curricular resources, focused on climate change and environmental justice issues in California. These resources will be released as open education resources (OER) under Creative Commons licensing. For a synopsis of the program click here.
Who You Are
An individual with a strong background in curriculum development and publishing processes, including working with authoring platforms such as Learning Tapestry, Curriki, and/or others. You are passionate about culturally relevant, meaningful, and equitable expansion of environmental literacy for all California students.
What You'll Do
The short-term goal is to design, create, test, and publish high-quality curricular resources that are educative for both teachers and students. Teacher networks will be developed and used to disseminate, pilot, and evaluate the resources in a range of community and school settings. Once the materials are available, they will be introduced to the education community via webinars, workshops (online and face-to-face) and presentations.
The long-term goal is for every child in California, at every grade level, to have an in-depth experience inquiring into local environmental issues that pertain to climate change and environmental justice. Our goal is to create enhanced capacity across the state — vision, leadership, resources, networks — which can support future efforts to improve climate literacy and promote environmental justice. The Curriculum Director will lead the program and develop the partnerships and networks necessary to develop and support the implementation of the curricular resources throughout the state.
What You'll Offer
At least 10 years’ experience of curriculum development and publishing processes, and 5+ years of applicable teaching and administrative experience in the formal K–12 school system or equivalent experience working with K–12 school systems through the nonformal education sector. Knowledge of relevant state standards and frameworks is essential.
A passion for education, environmental literacy and justice, for improving the quality of instruction, and the expansion of environmental learning opportunities for all students.
A proven track record of fostering enthusiasm, engaging stakeholders, and managing relationships across K–12 school systems and community-based partners.
Deep knowledge and understanding of equity and cultural relevance in education for historically marginalized students, and demonstrated promotion of both within past work experience.
What We'll Offer
Competitive compensation
Generous paid time off/PTO and paid holidays
100% covered medical, dental, vision, life & long-term disability insurance for full-time employees
401(k) plan with base, matching, and discretionary contributions
Learning & development opportunities
Colleagues regularly engaged in conversations about race, class, power and privilege as part of our commitment to equity and inclusion
Work is conducted in your home workspace or our office in the Presidio, San Francisco
