Mass Audubon is seeking an experienced, creative, and entrepreneurial camp leader who is as passionate about youth development as they are about nature and its conservation. Located on the shores of picturesque Hubbard Pond in southern New Hampshire, Wildwood is a camp that fully integrates nature-based programming into the best of learning and growing at overnight camp. We are seeking a Camp Leader who will have the core programmatic responsibility to manage of the summer resident camp for ages 9-14, leadership programs for high school students, teen adventure trips, and Family Camp for all ages. During the rest of the year, Wildwood hosts environmental education and outdoor education programs for schools, groups, and serves as the host site for Mass Audubon’s Day Camp Field School and other statewide programs.

The Wildwood Director oversees and manages all aspects of Camp Wildwood including the coaching and development of a team of four yearround staff. In collaboration with the team at Wildwood and staff at Mass Audubon Headquarters, the Director is responsible for program development and innovation, camper and staff recruitment, staff professional development and management, site planning and management, marketing, budget management, fundraising, and community engagement.

The Wildwood Director also serves as Mass Audubon’s camp program specialist and will participate in leadership opportunities and represent Mass Audubon regionally and nationally in the camping and environmental education profession. The Director must ensure that programs meet American Camping Association (ACA) standards and required licensing by the State of New Hampshire.

Mass Audubon is the largest statewide provider of environmental education programming in New England. Almost half a million visitors of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds visit our sanctuaries each year, and 235,000 youth, families, and adults attend our education programs, which take place at our sanctuaries as well as in communities across the Commonwealth in partnership with schools and community-based organizations. Our camps reach over 11,000 children and their families from 76 percent of cities and towns in Massachusetts, and we offer programs serving schoolchildren in 62 percent of the state’s cities and towns. Our network of sanctuaries and nature centers provide many ways to connect people of all ages with nature—offering engaging and joyful experiences in a variety of ecosystems, increasing environmental literacy, and building conservation leaders. Our suite of education and community outreach programs position Mass Audubon as a leader and catalyst for conservation by inspiring and stimulating individual and institutional action, ensuring that our members, visitors, and program participants feel and act upon a deep sense of interconnection and responsibility as stewards of the natural world.

Responsibilities

• Refinement, communication, and implementation of Wildwood’s vision and identified programmatic outcomes.
• Lead, manage, and coach a team of full-time staff;
• Successfully recruit, hire, and inspire a large cadre of seasonal camp staff;
• Create a staff development program that supports camp staff as future environmental leaders;
• Development and monitoring of annual plans and budgets;
• Camper recruitment and increasing community visibility through social media and marketing in coordination with the Mass Audubon Division of Marketing and Communications;
• Ongoing coordination with Mass Audubon headquarters staff regarding programmatic, operational, and human resources policies and procedures;
• Fundraising for annual operations and capital campaigns in coordination with the Mass Audubon Philanthropy Division;
• Community outreach including a focus on underserved populations;
• Land conservation and resource stewardship in coordination with Mass Audubon Land Protection Program and Conservation Science Department;
• Project management on short and long term programming opportunities and facility maintenance, renovations and upgrades;
• Develop and maintain strong working relationships with neighbors, local partners, educational institutions, and federal, state and local officials; and
• Represent Mass Audubon as a leader in environmental education and nature-based camping including full participation in the Education Department Staff Team. 

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in education and/or environmental education/outdoor recreation, environmental science/studies, biology, non-profit management or related field or equivalent work experience (advanced degree preferred);
• Three-five years’ experience in year-round camp/environmental education programming, non-profit management, program coordination, or environmental education, and at least two of which are in a supervisory capacity;
• Experience in leading and managing a multi-faceted site that provides youth programming and environmental education;
• Ability to support, supervise, and inspire staff and develop a strong working team;
• Strong oral and written communication skills, including experience in public speaking;
• Experience developing and implementing annual program plans and budgets;
• Experience in fundraising;
• Ability to relate to a diverse range of people and exercise cultural humility and inclusion;
• Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheets;
• Passion for the mission of Mass Audubon;
• Ability to establish an effective Mass Audubon presence in surrounding communities; and
• Successful candidates must pass a CORI, SORI, and driver’s record check and successfully complete First Aid and CPR Certification upon hire. Valid driver’s license.
