The Friends of the Forest is a non-profit citizens organization located in Anacortes, WA dedicated to the preservation of the Anacortes Community Forest Lands (ACFL) through education, outreach, and stewardship. Friends of the Forest is seeking a Community Programs Coordinator with experience delivering accessible and inspiring outdoor education programs for a variety of ages and abilities. The Community Programs Coordinator will be responsible for planning and implementing environmental education programs for members of the community of all ages with the goals of creating connections and inspiring conservation of our forest lands. They will work in tandem with the Youth Education Coordinator to deliver the entirety of our educational programming, with each role leading the planning and implementation of their specific field (Community or Youth) and supporting the other through on-trail assistance. Finally, all staff will support various aspects of the organization through occasional blog posts, volunteer work sessions, and fundraising events, among other activities.

This position will be responsible for shaping our community program offerings and growing them into the future. This includes the potential for management responsibilities as the organization grows.
Role & Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and lead existing community education hikes, events, classes, and community science programs.
- Create, develop, and implement new community education programs in support of the Friends of the Forest mission.
- Assist Youth Education Coordinator on-trail with summer camps, afterschool programs, and other youth education programs.
- Partner with other local organizations to provide programming to community members.
- Manage community education programs by leading at least 1-3 forest walks per month.
- Coordinate and manage volunteers to assist with community forest walks.
- Manage records, participant forms, registrations, and program logistics.
- Assist with writing articles for magazines, blogs, and other media publications.
- Attend and assist with Friends of the Forest member events, community presentations, and once per month board meetings.
Desired Skills/Attributes
- Experience leading a variety of ages and abilities in outdoor hikes and activities including the ability to manage safety and risk in an outdoor environment.
- Experience with and enthusiasm for creating engaging and inspiring programs and activities connecting people to the natural world.
- Enthusiasm for applying knowledge of Northwest native plants and animals.
- Strong writing, organizational, and communication skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work both as a team member and independently in a variety of environments, including office, outdoors, and remote work.
- Energetic, self-motivated, and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to effectively and enthusiastically communicate information in a public setting.
- Ability to work and walk several miles in the outdoors in varied weather conditions and on varied terrain.
- Minimum of First Aid and CPR certifications, with a preference for Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certifications or a desire to attain such certifications upon hire.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
- Flexible schedule to accommodate occasional weekend and evening work.
- Must pass local police, Washington State, and FBI background checks.
Working Environment
Work is performed indoors (office, schools, partner organization facilities, etc.) and outdoors in a variety of forest and park areas. Outdoor work includes working year-round in varied weather conditions and on varied terrain. Work is a combination of in-person and remote and fluctuates depending on the time of year and workload. There is additional remote-work flexibility surrounding holiday seasons or other extended periods with the approval of the Executive Director.
