Overview:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (full description available at walkingmountains.org):
Personnel Management
- Supervise day-to-day work of Naturalist interns, providing support through training, observations, professional development, staff meetings, and evaluations
- Serve as a mentor and role model to Naturalist Interns in the development and design of educationally relevant and mission-driven interpretive and environmental education lessons
- In the absence of the Community Programs Director, serve as primary supervisor of Naturalist interns
Facility Management
● Oversee general and day-to-day operations at the WMSC campus and Exhibit Hall
- Upkeep of exhibits, interpretive signage, and learning spaces
- Maintain, organize and order specimens and other teaching resources
- Front desk procedures and program registration
- Collect and analyze visitor and program data
● Oversee program and visitor interaction for quality assurance
● Serve as Community Programs point person for campus programs
Program Administration
● Collaborate with the Community Programs Department staff to create new and improved educational opportunities for the community
● Coordinate program logistics and registration systems
● Primarily responsible for the planning and quality control of campus-based programs such as early childhood, interpretive walks, fee-based environmental education programs, and other special programs
●Assist other Community Programs staff with oversight and planning of all CP programs
● Assist in planning the budget, and maintain and track a variety of Community Programs budgets
● Coordinate early childhood environmental education programs with Eagle County Schools’ preschools and ensure that Eagle County School standards are met
● Maintain and promote partnerships with other early childhood programs and facilities, including private and public preschools
Program Instruction
●Create and deliver high-level program content for a wide variety of audiences
● Regularly instruct early childhood environmental education programs at a variety of locations, including preschools and community centers
● Plan, prepare, and teach all Community Programs offerings as needed
● Present or write nature education segments for local TV, Facebook Live, Vail Daily and other media outlets as needed
Qualifications:
● BA/BS in science, interpretation, education, or an environmental science-related field
● At least 1-2 years of field experience in environmental education and/or interpretation
● At least 1-2 years of field experience with early childhood education
● At least 1 year of supervisory experience
● Excellent public speaking skills and willingness to present to a variety of audiences
● Self-motivated and works well independently and within a team
● General knowledge of the natural and cultural resources of the Rocky Mountains
● Specialized knowledge or interest in a natural science field preferred
● Walking Mountains Science Center hires positive, energetic, friendly people
● Preferred: current Wilderness First Responder certification
● Preferred: Fluent in Spanish language
● Preferred: Certification through National Association for Interpretation
● Ability to work a full time, flexible schedule with variable hours and occasional evening and/or weekend responsibilities
Work Environment
● The Community Programs Coordinator is primarily based out of the Avon, CO campus and works in an open office environment. The Community Programs Coordinator has some offsite responsibilities throughout Eagle County which includes teaching offsite programs and supervision of the Naturalists. The Community Programs Coordinator will conduct programs and training in outdoor locations, in all weather conditions, throughout the year. Job responsibilities may occasionally require backcountry hiking in remote locations (wilderness) and travel on unpaved roads.
