Summary

Coastal Camp Counselors work with Environmental Science Educators to lead groups of day campers in grades K-9 in hiking and exploring the Marin Headlands, a beautiful coastal park that’s part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Each week counselors and educators work together with one group to implement lessons, games, stories and other activities centered around that week’s theme. This role will work as an educator for some weeks and a counselor for other weeks. The majority of campers are in the 1st-2nd age group or 3rd-4th age group. This role is ideal for people who have some experience teaching and leading groups and are looking to gain more through teaching and observing. Staff must be available for mandatory staff training through the end of camp, May 31st-August 14th.  

Counselor Primary Duties and Responsibilities 

Support and assist the implementation of lessons, group management, food, distribution, and maintaining camper safety and comfort over uneven terrain in all kinds of weather.

Proactively engage campers and manage safety in games and activities during early (8 am – 9:15 am) and/or aftercare (3:30 pm- 5:15 pm). 

Create, lead and/or support activities for campers in one or more of the following areas Camper’s Choice: (1) arts & crafts, (2) music & movement,  (3) sports & recreation and/or (4) Free Choice.

Lead one required curriculum activity each week.

Desire and ability to be active and engaged, with campers at all times. 

Provide a safe and fun environment where campers play, explore, learn.

Educator Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Lead campers through weeklong, hands-on, experiential learning experiences.

Facilitate, using a student-centered approach, interactive, community-building environmental education activities that inspire wonder and questioning, engage critical thinking, are multidisciplinary, and theme-based.

Differentiate activities and programming of weekly themed sessions according to the age, background, and needs of the campers.

Experience, Competencies and Education 

Required: 

Experience teaching in formal or non-formal education settings 

Available flexible eight-hour shifts Monday-Friday from May 31st to August 14th  

Possess current Wilderness First Aid certification and CPR (Adult, Child and Infant) or ability to get certified before the camp season begins at your own expense. 

Ability to implement and model excellent risk management practices and maintain a physically, socially and emotionally safe environment for our participants

Capable of working as part of a collaborative team.

Preferred:

Relevant Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Experience in field research or relevant leadership and community service work

Willingness to be coached and openness to feedback

Experience working with groups that are non-dominate 

Experience in other NatureBridge programs

Wilderness First Responder Certification
