The New Haven Land Trust is seeking a full-time, year round Camp Director and Preserve Coordinator to plan and oversee the operation of an 8 week environmental summer camp for elementary school aged children (ages 4-14+) as well as coordinate educational events on the Land Trust Nature Preserves throughout the year. We are seeking an individual with strong management, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Candidates should have a background working with youth, managing staff, and with hands-on education.
The Schooner summer camp incorporates land and sea based programing on New Haven’s unique coastline through sailing lessons and environmental education. The Camp Director will be responsible for managing and organizing all aspects of the Schooner Summer Camp including hiring, training, and managing 12 camp staff members as well as teenage volunteers, overseeing and modifying curriculum, communicating with parents, camp outreach and registration, updating any emergency protocols and policies, ensuring all camp paperwork is in accordance with the Department of Public Health state standards, risk management, and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all campers. When the camp is not in session the Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating activities on the New Haven Land Trust nature preserves, including infrastructure improvements and maintenance, volunteer events, and educational events/activities. In addition the Coordinator will serve as the primary point of contact for all general inquiries and requests for information about the preserves and related events.
Length of Employment: Year Round Full Time
Employment Start Date: March 1, 2018
Compensation: $45,000/year with benefits
Work Commitment: The Camp Director and Preserve Coordinator will work 40 hours per week and will report directly to the Executive Director
Job Requirements:
Must be 21 years or older
Bachelor's degree or higher
Confident overseeing and managing a camp of 80 campers per week, 12 staff, and teenage volunteers
Demonstrate level of maturity and ability to handle all aspects of the job description and potential issues associated with the summer camp
Experience managing staff
Prior camp experience (Camp Director experience prefered)
Ability to problem solve and multitask
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Experience working with diverse populations, including youth
Ability to perform physical tasks
Educational background and experience suited to the requirements of the position including knowledge of, or interest in learning marine biology, coastal ecosystems, and environmental conservation
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Camp Specific Job Functions
Complete all camp licensing and paperwork in accordance with the CT Department of Public Health
Hire, train, and manage camp staff
Assist with and organize camp registration
Organize pre and post camp duties
Communicate with Executive Director on all relevant camp matters
Create camp schedules and daily activities
Ensure all camp policies are being followed
Serve as a positive role model
Update camp policies
Camp outreach
Communicate with parents
Motivate campers and staff and ensure mutual support and group building throughout the camp experience
Promote character development throughout the camp
Assist with behavior needs of campers
Support Educators and Sailing Instructors
Oversee Junior Counselors (teenage volunteers)
Ensure a high level of standards in all activities, themes, and specialty programs

Schooner Camp outreach and future planning
Organizing and coordinating volunteer and educational events at nature preserves
Supporting other educational and volunteer efforts with the Land Trust such as educational sign content design, and curriculum design
Preserve infrastructure improvements and maintenance, including sign installation, trail blazes and trail building, as well as planting, weeding, and watering
Assistance with other activities that support Land Trust such as fundraising efforts, contact list management, email outreach, etc.
