Overview:
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Hiring, training and supervising multiple staff, including conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and implementing hiring, discipline and termination procedures.
- Oversee the development and evaluation of all environmental education activities and programming for Wilkerson Nature Preserve, including training and mentoring others in developing, teaching and evaluating EE programming.
- Coordinates the natural resources management of the site according to the site's land management plan and coordinates grounds maintenance with Park Department.
- Reviews operations and ensures adherence with applicable goals, objectives, standards and regulations
- Provide professional and technical expertise and consultation to internal and external stakeholders; reviews and responds to requests; evaluates plans, proposals and/or construction drawings; monitors compliance; makes recommendations, initiates and oversees actions in alignment with program/facility/operational goals, objectives and initiatives.
- Provides project and program administration; coordinates and facilitates activities, schedules and timelines; monitors scope and completion of work; reviews and evaluates adherence to quality and safety standards and overall service completion. Monitors and administers assigned budget; assists in procuring supplies and materials; prepares and maintains records, reports, presentation materials, data and/or program documentation.
- Plans, organizes, and directs special events for the facilities; encourages volunteer participation and builds partnerships with the community, local schools, universities, and agencies.
- Reviews and promotes community needs, recommends programs, writes policies and determines expansion needs or efficacy of programs offered.
- Prepares budgetary needs and other reports for the facility such as attendance, revenue; monitors expenditures and makes requests for capital improvement projects.
- Supervises the custodial care of facilities; reviews the maintenance of equipment, buildings, and grounds; collaborates on resolution of problems with the appropriate personnel.
- Helps conduct public relations and promotions for the Center; advises citizens of programs and activities offered; prepares bulletins, pamphlets, brochures, and newsletters relating to center programs.
- Assist the City in cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Directly supervises full time staff, various part time employees, seasonal employees, interns, and volunteers in the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department.
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
- Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in parks and recreation, landscape design and maintenance, forestry, urban forestry or field directly related to assignment.
- Degree in Natural Resources Management, Environmental education or other related degrees preferred and five years of professional experience directly related to assignment.
- Progressive management experience in environmental education, interpretation or nature programming including developing, teaching and evaluating environmental education programs is preferred.
OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing/Certifications
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record required.
- Knowledge of best practices in environmental education and interpretation. Preferred: Candidate has NC Environmental Education certification or willing to obtain.
- CPR/First Aid are required upon hire.
