The Mountaineers is a community of outdoor recreationists and conservationists founded in 1906 to explore the peaks and waterways of the Pacific Northwest. Today, we have 14,000 members and 7 branches throughout Washington state, and thanks to the work of generations of volunteers we continue to enjoy an outstanding reputation in the field of outdoor education and recreation. Our dedicated staff and volunteers get people outside to experience the power of the outdoors and we advocate for access and protection of recreational lands so that future generations can enjoy these places too. The After-School Program Coordinator is an inspirational staff leader, and an organizational master. They have the primary responsibility for the safe and effective execution of educational and recreational programming. This includes being a leader to staff and volunteers, enthusiastically facilitating afternoon programs and curriculum, taking initiative to go above and beyond, and working with the Associate Youth Programs Manager to orchestrate all things after school.

Youth ages 6-13 are invited to join The Mountaineers one afternoon a week from January to May for climbing-based after-school programs. Each six-week program consists of rock climbing, outdoor skills, crafts, games, and more. Winter and Spring themes include: Ropes and Rock, Mountain Discovery, and Climbing Adventures. After-School Instructors may have the opportunity to work break camps in February and April as well.

What you will do:

• Oversee, organize, and support programmatic elements of after-school such as group games, climbing instruction, and general curriculum.
• Create a positive, enthusiastic, supportive, professional environment for staff, volunteers, and youth.
• Train staff and volunteers in program delivery and curriculum.
• Act as a mentor and point of contact person for staff and volunteers.
• Act as the “face of after-school” at all times, including:
• Facilitating check in and check out
• Running activities daily
• Providing a leadership presence throughout the program
• Providing excellent customer service to after-school families
•  Assist Associate Youth Programs Manager in developing after-school programs, activities, and educational curriculum.
• Ensure The Mountaineers youth policies and procedures, as well as COVID-19 policies and procedures, are followed and adhered to at all time.
• Ensure all supplies are ordered and ready for use each program
• Function as the on-site staff member when programs are running            

Who you are:

• Positive, inspirational, enthusiastic, team player.
• Experience working with youth in the outdoors.
• Experience with curriculum development.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
• Minimum age 21.
• Climbing and belaying experience preferred.
• Current CPR & First Aid Certification.
• Ability to pass a national criminal background and sex offender check.
• Ability to work weekly from January 4 through May 28, 2021.
