Overview:

The Adventure Programs Manager is responsible for overseeing the implementation of all our off-site and adventure programs including staff, administrative, and financial management.  Such programs include all school programming hosted off site and all teen Adventure programs in the summer.  The Adventure Programs Manager will provide oversight and supervision to program staff through specialized offsite and adventure trainings.  The Adventure Manager will also oversee all aspects of permitting, safety, licensing, equipment, and logistics associated with regional adventure programs.  In collaboration with the other program managers and Director of Education, the Adventure Programs Manager also develops new curriculum, lessons, safety, and risk management plans for all Adventure Programs.  Particular attention will be focused on developing our teen program offerings including a leadership framework, itineraries, and progression.  Keystone Science School is in the process of bringing our climbing program in-house and the Adventure Program Manager will be responsible for overseeing all climbing within Keystone Science School programs.  This could include training, risk management, permits, gear, etc.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

Staff Management 

  • Provide direct supervision and management to Lead Program Instructors, Program Instructors, and Adventure Instructors;
  • Oversee program specific staffing charts including all hiring, training, and coaching;  
  • Partner with other Program Managers and Program Coordinators to schedule, train, and evaluate program Instructors assigned to each program area. 

Administration and Financial Management 

  • Accountable for the creation and management of expense budgets for all programs under the responsibility of this position; 
  • Forecast and report on all expenses associated with the implementation of programs under the responsibility of this position; 
  • Partner with the Director of Education in the management and development of new curricula options;  
  • Oversee the implementation of Adventure and off site KSS programs in collaboration with the instructional team; 
  • Teach and facilitate programs on an as-needed basis; 
  • Work with the Safety Committee to manage Risk Management and Colorado licensure;   

Customer Service 

  • Partner with the Director of Marketing and Strategic Partnerships and the Marketing department to support program marketing and outreach efforts; 
  • Support customer experience team on an as-needed basis. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

The minimum requirements in knowledge, skills, and abilities for the candidate of our choice: 

  • Proficiency with risk management as it pertains to outdoor education;
  • An understanding of education pedagogy and curriculum, and the ability to adapt instruction and lessons to meet a wide variety of learners utilizing different educational philosophies;
  • Exceptional Leadership skills and ability to mentor program staff;
  • Experience leading outdoor rock climbing, canyoneering, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, mountaineering, backpacking, and/or cross country skiing trips with youth;
  • Strong work ethic and will work until the job is complete; 
  • Motivation to contribute positively to the KSS at-large community; 
  • Multi-task efficiently while managing a high-volume workload in a fast-paced, changing environment; 
  • Strong command of communication, writing, and organizational skills; 
  • Effectively interact with people of diverse backgrounds and different levels of experience; 
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including days, nights, and weekends;
  • Ability to work in a variety of locations within Colorado and occasionally outside of Colorado; 
  • Ability to work in a busy environment with many distractions; 
  • Superior customer service skills, with the ability to be creative and think 'outside the box'; 
  • Have an interest in, respect for, and ability to work with children. 
  • A proven track record in working with diverse learners and communities. 

Our required education, experience, and certifications: 

  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree; 
  • Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and CPR certifications, from an approved vendor, or the ability to obtain within the first 90 days of employment;
  • Minimum of 2 years experience managing staff; 
  • Minimum of 2 years experience teaching in outdoor education programs or classroom setting; 
  • Minimum of 2 years experience developing science and/or education curricula for a field and outdoor setting;
  • Minimum of 2 years experience with current practices of risk management; 
  • Age 21+ with an excellent driving record and a valid driver's license; 
  • Must be able to successfully pass a comprehensive background check. 

In addition to the above required talents, our ideal candidate will have these preferred skill sets: 

Completed the AMGA SPI course OR has similar experience;
Basic comprehension of the Spanish language via written and/or verbal form.

Compensation Information:

Salary base rate is $56,874 to $68,709 plus a generous benefits package that includes:

  • 75% employer-paid medical and dental premiums for the employee and dependents;
