Overview:

A 10-week full-time seasonal position located at DelNature’s Abbott’s Mill Nature Center in Milford, DE. Assists with planning, preparation, coordination, & delivery of environmental education programs for a variety of audiences. Assists with live animal care & maintenance of education materials, equipment, & tools. At times, supports the Abbott’s Land & Biodiversity Team in the overall care & maintenance of lands owned & operated by Delaware Nature Society (DelNature).

Responsibilities

  • Teaches and/or co-leads in-person and virtual environmental education programs for school, group, and public audiences. Assists with program preparation, as well as maintenance and sanitization of program materials, equipment, and tools.
  • Attends DelNature camp training (held at Ashland Nature Center in Hockessin, DE) and co-leads 6 weeks of in-person summer camp programs for ages 5 – 12 years old.
  • Assists with live animal care as needed.
  • Assists with maintenance, repairs, and cleaning of all facilities.
  • Assists with promotion of organization mission, membership, and goals through publicity and event support.

  • At times, assists with the care of all tree reforestation and meadow restoration sites, controlling non-native invasive plants through both mechanical and chemical means.
  • At times, assists in maintain trails, lawns, fence lines, and teaching areas through mowing, string trimming, and pruning.
  • At times, assists in maintaining trail signage, bridges, boardwalks, accessible paths, and wood chipped paths.
  • At times, assists with routine servicing and repairs of all vehicles, equipment, tools, boats, and trailers.
  • Assists with other projects, programs, and duties as needed; independent projects encouraged.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Current student enrolled in college/trade program pursuing a degree in environmental science, wildlife studies, recreation, conservation, or related field.
  • Prior teaching experience and/or experience working with children.
  • Natural sciences knowledge and outdoor recreation skills/experience (preferred).
  • Current CPR/First Aid/AED certification. (Training will be provided if not certified)
  • Public relations/communication/group management skills.
  • Prior experience with safely operating and maintain a wide range of hand tools, power tools, vehicles, and small/large engine equipment (preferred).
  • Ability to work effectively and productively as a part of a team, indoors and outdoors under variable weather conditions – programs are held rain or shine.
  • Self-motivated, organized, attentive to details, and has effective time management skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a schedule that meets the needs of the organization, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as needed.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.

  • Position at times requires strenuous physical work - frequent standing, bending, twisting, stooping, climbing, and lifting, pushing or pulling objects over 50 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required for this job include close, vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • The noise level in the work environment can be loud while operating machinery and equipment. Proper ear protection will be provided and required to be worn at these times.
  • Ability to plan, lead, and participate in program activities and projects in a variety of indoor and/or outdoor settings, weather, and terrains.

 

Salary and Compensation

Please note this is a full time, seasonal position, working 40 hours/week for 10 weeks from May 17 – July 27, 2021. The pay rate for this position is set at $9.50, paid hourly for the 10-week term position divided into twice-monthly payments with all required federal and state taxes withheld. Some travel in personal vehicle may be required for programming/training, with mileage reimbursement provided.
